UK volume housebuilders predictably complaining about anything of benefit to the ultimate residents - like solar power - that will stop them building bog-standard, identikit rabbit hutches at speed, & selling for enormous prices Which is their preferred business model www.ft.com/content/e33c...

I've been clearing out my father's house after his death last year. I found this paper from 1945 carefully wrapped in his desk. It must have been bought by my grandparents just before VE day. It's so moving to read the stories and imagine their lives as the shadow of war lifted after 5+ years.

Good to see that over 40% of our electricity is coming from renewables, with over 1/3 from solar

⚠️TODAY Dulwich Picture Gallery is urgently looking for volunteers to help plant out some trees. They’re concerned about them surviving the heat and have about 30-40 still left to plant. Go to the Meadow Space at the gallery from 11am and follow the signs.

Some fantastic low carbon retrofit funded by DESNZ's Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme

Where did all the butterflies go? 🚨🦋 Newly released data has revealed that 2024 was one of the worst years on record for butterflies in the UK, and more than half of butterfly species are now in long-term decline. We are in a #ButterflyEmergency.

UK not looking very good either....

About bloody time Ireland did the same and imposed an all year round ban on burning land for sheep. In an era of climate and ecological breakdown, this barbaric practice has *no* place in our landscapes.

The number of entire homes ‘lost to Airbnb’ in Bristol increased by 28% in only the last 18 months, according to InsideAirbnb It’s fast approaching 2,000 in a city with one of the worst housing crises in Britain A Bristol Post investigation- please have a read: www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol...

The Radio Teleswitch service will be switched off from the end of June. If you have an RTS meter, you will need to get this changed. Please urgently contact your supplier to avoid losing access to energy or constantly pay peak rates.

One of the most important graphs of the energy transition. The mindblowing progress in battery storage. Storing power in lithium-ion batteries is now cheaper than in hydropower dams.💡 This changes everything. Graph from www.nature.com/articles/nen... with cost for 2023 added. 🔋>🏔️ --> ☀️>🛢️.

Remarkably important study by #EnergySky colleague @kevinjkircher.com from PurdueU. They developed a smart software system that minimizes need for costly electrical panel upgrades when transitioning homes to 100% electrification. This could be the holy grail of electrification. Sign me up! 🧪💡🔌☀️💨🔋

Indonesia's last tropical glacier is set to disappear before 2030! 😰 Latest remote survey of the Puncak Jaya area (aka Pyramid Carstenz, 4884 m) indicates a glacier area of 0.165 km in 2024, a 64% loss since last survey in 2018! 😳 Rate of recent loss is... otherworldly 😱 doi.org/10.5194/egus...

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people. Sound efficient? HT @ellenmacarthurfdn.bsky.social

As the growing demand for charcoal and firewood hastens the decline of shea trees in Ghana, communities living on the fringes of the country’s Mole National Park are planting fast-growing trees of other species as a buffer. The majority of participants are women.

Really sad to report that our friend and colleague Richard Fortey passed away this morning after a short battle with cancer. We’ll all miss his wit and wisdom. Here he is checking out a dino footprint we found while filming together on the Isle of Wight

We need to upgrade more homes so that more people can benefit from cleaner energy and lower bills. That is why it was fantastic to speak to those working in the retrofit industry at @FuturebuildNow yesterday. We cannot do this without you.

We can easily spare a tenth of England for nature without affecting food production! 20% of our land produces just 3% of our food. Vast swathes of our uplands are owned by about 150 wealthy landowners who use it for shooting grouse, and set fire to our biggest carbon sink, our peat bogs...

Never forget indeed.

Good to be co-signatory to letter about urgency of introducing the #NaturalHistory GCSE pioneered by fab Mary Colwell. As she says, we must get to know our fellow travellers on this planet again & feel wonder & awe - if we only pass on to young people that Earth is a problem to be fixed, we’ll fail

This is George Monbiot's "X" leaving speech, and wow ❤️ @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

A provocative take on this - maybe we should see landfilled plastic as a crude form of carbon capture. I know it's not permanent, but over the time window that it matters - maybe it's the least worst option to have oil products in a hole in the ground. Better than burning it. What do you think?

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once: - Things are going to get worse, no matter what - The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today theconversation.com/my-new-dark-... by @edhawkins.org

My own #OA contribution is "Bending the curve of #biodiversity loss requires a ‘satnav’ for nature".
