It was a delight to find these beach strawberries (Cyttaria gunnii) while tramping at Milford Sound. They are so unique-looking! They are present in Australia and New Zealand, but only grow from beech trees, which are rare mostly found on the West Coast of Te Wai Pounamu. #fungifriends #fungi

I adore this song, it's message, and the music video is so well made! youtu.be/I057BPSdt5E?... #musicmonday

Paradise Shelducks, or Putangitangi are one of the few native species in Aotearoa that are common and thriving! Nearly always in a pair, the males have black heads and the females have white heads. They are quick to honk at passers by and while in flight. #ducks #aotearoa #sciart #birdart

Did you know 2024 was the Year of the Forest Birds in Hawaii? Despite challenges, there was hope: 5 ʻalalā returned to the wild, new conservation tools emerged, and awareness soared. #HawaiianBirds #Conservation #HawaiiNews

Can't help but think of little cloaked critters when I see the fallen nikou palm fronds in the forest. #forest #fantasyforest #forestfantasy #nature

Music is a big part of my daily life, so I thought I'd share a few songs here every now and gain. Let off some steam. #CarsieBlanton #eattherich #music www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD_e...

The Scarlet Macaw video is wonderful!

Mushroom photos from last season on the Government track, near Dunedin. Fall is coming again and the mycelium is calling! The first 2 are Hypholoma australianum. The purple one is a Webcap (Cortinarius), and there was this huge log covered in Inonotus nothofagi! #fungifriends #mushroom #fungus

I love painting wildlife and ecosystems partly because I learn so much from working with other researchers. The upland bully lives in Central Otago rivers and streams along with water boatmen or backswimmers. For a small fish they have a lot of color! #sciart #scicomm #fishart #freshwater #otago

Kaka are and endemic parrot of# Aotearoa New Zealand. I took this photo at Orokonui Eco-sanctuary and decided to paint it to stay sane today. #kaka #orokonui #Aotearoa #parrot

Yet another dedicated scientist and public servant, this time from US Fish and Wildlife, showing up unpaid after she was fired to volunteer to protect an endangered species. What are we even doing here. 🎁 link: 🧪

For every 5 butterflies seen 20 years ago, now there are only 4. While a few species have actually increased, many more have declined—some dramatically. Of 554 species, 107 declined by over 50%. Even still, providing habitat & reducing pesticides can change things! Learn more🔗 xerces.org/press

It's #Endangeredspeciesweek and I'd like to highlight a bird that rarely gets considered. Red-billed gulls seemingly everywhere in #Aotearoa, but their breeding populations are vulnerable to a multitude of human-caused disturbances. They might be annoying, but we'd miss them if they were gone.

Obligatory wildlife for #worldwildlifeday ! This is one of my favorite wildlife photos I've taken, or a Cascade fox on Tahoma/Mt.Rainier. #fox #tahoma

Happy World Wildlife Day! I made these coloring pages featuring wildlife of the open ocean habitat for NOAA and OCNMS a while ago and forgot I had them! Which one do you like better? #worldwildlifeday #shark #dolphin #sunfish #oceanart #orca #seal #salmon #sciart

🪶 Today, more than 1/3 of the federal grant $$ we were relying on to finance our science & conservation work in 2025 is paused w/ no indication of when, or if, we will be able to access it again. Your tax-deductible donation helps us weather this period of uncertainty. birdpop.org/pages/do... 1/2

Last year I helped out my sister with her ecological fieldwork in Oteake Conservation Park, Central Otago. The deep gullies between the scree slopes are hidden gems. The cold springs create microclimates for a diversity of rare plants, insects, and lizards. #reptiles #Oteake #Newzealand

I'm sorry did I just tear up over this little fish? #anglerfish #deepsea #deepseacreature

I've been a deep sea fan for a long time, so much I even made a book! The plight of the #anglerfish is quite touching, as is her international romanticization. If you'd like to learn more about the deep sea and support a small-time artist, check it out www.amazon.com/Z-Deep-Dark-... #deepsea #sciart

Thinking of that beautiful #anglerfish so lost at the surface. Some force driving her to move up even though it will mean her end. If I may be sentimental, this could be a symbol to pay attention to the proposed destruction of the deep sea by mining corps. #nodeepseamining

NZ dotterels are like cute little toasted marshmallows. Same colors anyway! They're in trouble though from introduced predators, so if you live where they live, lend a hand and get a trap or two. #nzconservation #nzdotterel #wildlifeart #sciart #birds #wildlifeartist

Sharing another artwork that highlights freshwater wildlife of the Taieri River. Longfin tuna (eel), galaxiids, kahu, koura, black fronted tern, and invertebrates. This image was used in Tiaki Maniototo's recent publication on river health. #sciart #wildlifeart #scicomm #interpretivesign

Last year I showed a scientific poster at the The Society for Research of Amphibians and Reptiles of New Zealand conference. This is a portrait of an Otago green skink, a threatened lizard that is endemic to the Otago region of NZ, which I used on my poster. #sciart

Fulfilling my dream of being a #wildlife #artist, I painted this for Tiaki Manioto (freshwater conservation group) to highlight some key natural features of the #Taieri River in Central #Otago. Freshwater muscles, Australasian #bittern, freshwater #invertebrates, and the upland bully (fish)

When the sun shines on #Mopanui these young #Otago green skinks come out to sunbathe. Otago green #skinks are not well understood, but from recent observations they seem to cuddle to stay warm or to warm up.

Hey there! I'm New on Bluesky and thought I would use it to share my natural history art and photography. It's amazing what you can find when wandering around Ōtepoti at night. We've got a kōrero gecko, harvestman, velvet worm, and a harakeke caterpillar.
