I support England. Hope to see them win today but also enjoying the performance by Italy’s 22yo No.8 Ross Vintcent, an Exeter Chiefs player. #EngvIta #ExeterChiefs

A thread about yesterday’s #TeslaTakedown protest. I wanted to join a protest on the first weekend, but I hadn’t been to a protest in over 20 years, was too scared to protest solo and wasn’t sure if anyone would go with me. (This was, in fact wrong: Friends and family were and are interested.) 1/n

Interested to know what @hpiandycowper.bsky.social & other NHS policy experts make of this story. It seems supremely ignorant when reporting the NHS element - is this because it’s a political briefing? Glad Sir James Mackey is given his proper deferential title! www.thetimes.com/article/9689...

My Week: JD Vance£ www.thetimes.com/article/74fd...

Who, in the UK, gave Donald Trump “the benefit of the doubt”?!

Lol

That European free speech problem that JD Vance lectured us on in Munich…..

A translation for his fans: Неважно, насколько отвратительны нам Трамп и Вэнс по поводу Европы, они говорят грубую правду Саймон Дженкинс США выбрали наихудший возможный момент и наихудший возможный способ, чтобы сказать это, но призывать к перегруппировке — это правильно

There are three articles on Meghan’s new Netflix show in The (London) Times. Obviously a slow news day.

"Trump and his acolytes have elevated the principles of capitalism and showbusiness to the status of a moral system. Wealth, power, beauty — and great television — matter more than right or wrong." - @j-amesmarriott.bsky.social

This is good by @j-amesmarriott.bsky.social but also depressingly futile? Remember when Robin Cook’s “ethical dimension” to foreign policy was deemed naive by political opponents? Oh for moral leadership to become fashionable & for leaders to be held accountable. www.thetimes.com/article/963e...

The Putinic Verses?

😳

Huge sympathy for Freeman’s argument based, as it is, on her experiences. But I think she’s being unfair to @simonforstroud.bsky.social who was also clear (she didn’t quote this bit) he thinks the assisted dying bill shouldn’t & won’t apply to someone with anorexia. www.thetimes.com/article/eeda...

Good piece by @rcolvile.bsky.social on news about NHS changes which will understandably have passed most by. Many don’t understand the sheer size and complexity of individual NHS Trusts. I’ve run 3 in the last 10 years, 2 with 15k+ staff and £1bn+ budgets. www.thetimes.com/article/c767...

The Spectator now appears to be the home of Trump, and therefore Putin, apologism. A surprise? Not really.

Kleptocurrency!

“Your majesty, I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that a recent Conservative Home Secretary thinks you can only be English when six generations of your ancestors are all English. The good news is that the Trumps are coming to dinner!”

Surely The Times should place a warning above these pieces: “this column has been written and placed by the Tufton Street IEA”. This would mean I wouldn’t get halfway through before realising I’d wasted my time on reductionist, reactionary tosh. www.thetimes.com/article/6047...

Three years ago today, our players stopped being cricketers. Almost ICC members, we instead became soldiers, humanitarians, refugees. We are all still alive. But hundreds of Ukrainian sportspeople have lost their lives. Слава Украïнi 🇺🇦 Героям слава! 🙏🏻 www.pitchpublishing.co.uk/shop/getting...

I normally dislike Gerard Baker columns, he has been an apologist for Trumpian Republican politics. But this is interesting. Will the American people accept naked self interest as the prime driver of US foreign policy over, at least claimed, democratic moral intent? www.thetimes.com/article/5965...

He's only been a member for five minutes and he's already saying the party has gone to pot. Did he not realise what he was signing up for?

So hard to tell who the good guys are www.ft.com/video/cffdbf...

Worth having a look. I’ve been a subscriber to Prospect for many years but it’s now more relevant than ever.

Reminder that the @prospectmagazine.co.uk paywall is down for a few more hours to celebrate our 30% growth in our 30th year… Come and see why we’re flourishing

Ahhhhh! So this is the freedom of speech that Vance was lecturing us all about!

I guess Zelensky is a dictator in the same way Churchill was in the 1940s. No election and took American support……

Fascinating analysis. It definitely describes me. I’m inclined to be “quiet ideologue” although less quiet since retiring! It’s a real concern that our approach tends to put other people off. Being right all the time is, after all, more of a burden than an advantage!

The painful sight of, Johnson, our ex, unmissed prime minister, trying to excuse the disinformation being spread by Trump to justify his appeasement of Putin. Private Eye have a more succinct interpretation!

This week a Russian missile landed two doors away from the home of the family we host in the UK. Dad was at home in Kyiv and was ok. This is Russian aggression unprovoked by Ukraine and the UK, Europe and the US must stand up to it. Otherwise who is next? www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/w...

I had thought the Conservatives supported academic freedom. This suggests Badenoch sees academia as a vehicle for propaganda and a particular conservative world view. Confusing!
