Headed to Melbourne, Australia for HRI2025!

Yeah, I’m sure the three leg trip I’m about to leave on will be fine…..

I think about this headline all of the time.

Very big deal - German court finds Teslas are defective for phantom braking - there are many such cases reported in the NHTSA standing general order. This is very bad news for self-driving companies as well www.carscoops.com/2025/02/germ...

I feel like now is a good time to mention that human-robot interaction researchers are really friendly people who like to help make friendly robot designs 🤖 Many of us are looking for consulting positions as well

Exactly the opposite of how I want my tax dollars used

This is a great time to fail upwards I guess…

Oscar and Fritz reporting in for #caturday

Those are Nazi salutes. They're Nazis.

I’m George Takei and I approve of this message.

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

Imagine being rich enough to do anything you want and choosing to take food and medicine from starving children to give yourself even more money.

Boston knows how to protest, even in 6F windchill!

Another #caturday post to lift some spirits from the nonsense that has been coming from DC. The boys are all wiped out on cushions

The dark knight surveys the city #caturday

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

The people of Massachusetts voted overwhelmingly to get this done. Leaders like Governor Maura Healey and Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell stayed in the fight. And now working people can save time and money by having more options for where they can get their cars fixed.

Is this the first instance of money actually being "revoked" (stolen) from an allocation already paid? comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/sta...

I should probably wait until my tenure case is fully approved…

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

In case anyone reading this works on autocorrect: every time I type superb owl I actually mean it! I know it’s a corny joke but you don’t need to save me from myself

Good evidence Musk hasn’t worked with too many legacy systems if he thinks checking “no duplicate keys” is the only way to prevent duplicates…

This may be controversial, but honestly I think the *real* racists are the people saying racist stuff.

This is a good summary about why everything DOGE is doing is very concerning www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

I’m not a fed, but I work for the state government and I could certainly be paid better elsewhere. But I chose this job because I care. These feds don’t deserve this kind of crap.

A friend wrote this and I thought maybe some others would enjoy reading it, too. It’s helped me deal with some of what’s going on right now. wanderingslavicist.substack.com/p/to-my-amer...

To anyone who has emailed me recently, this is probably the reason I haven’t gotten back to you

Not the first time he’s manipulated a market…

Normally I keep up with a drip feed of news all day, but I’ve been busy today so it all hit me at once when I got home from a nice dinner with colleagues. Just… wtf…

Surely this won’t affect our ability to stay on top of research….

The Treasury Department right now. People are turning out against Musk and DOGE staging a takeover of the Treasury’s payment system. This crowd is big. The whole block is packed. “Lock him up,” everyone yells.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

THIS IS THE WAY mashable.com/article/mark...

How dare I move him to change my sheets!

I don’t have anything clever for this either, except that you need to tell everyone you know that this is happening, because the news doesn’t seem too interested in reporting it. This is extremely serious and bad.

CDC officials ordered to remove pronouns from mail signatures, per new memo I obtained

If you are a federal worker being offered a buyout, I would advise against taking it. Of course, this is a personal decision for everyone and it’s your choice. But these offers are a rush job. The legality is questionable and this admin does not keep to its word. They aren’t firing for a reason.

Dual sunbeam power!

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

Incredible things continue to happen on the federal worker subreddit.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Fritz will learn the secret of the bubbles!

Starting to actually think that the United States might be cursed. Is there any chance whatsoever that we accidentally built it on top of an Indian burial ground??
