Not comics, but in a similar vein, Ryukishi07 of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni fame was a civil servant until age 30, after which he created some of the most iconic horror visual novels to come out of Japan.

Why did people dislike it? I agree that it’s definitely one of the best arcs, and I’m unsure why it’d be controversial (compared to something like Umineko 8, which I like but understand why some people wouldn’t).
