Been in a bit of a slump lately. So I found an @xkcd.com cartoon in the real world.

Beginning study of a medieval artist (Master of Spencer 6) and his manuscripts. I found a 2015 dissertation on his work. Can’t get any luckier than that. Delves into the palette and style quite deep. I’ll get information that I would never have been able to discern myself. Got lucky on this one.

My latest project. Life map of a friend. Based on ca1234 Ebstorf Map that was destroyed in WWII. It's not a geographical map and doesn't portray a flat Earth. The figures are 1-1.5cm tall. Most text is 2mm high. 22"x22". ~1,500 words written by Sadira. Can't fully explain in short blurb. #artshare

Sunday Afternoon in the Park.lores (2017) This is the first cmyk piece I created with cmyk dot screens I made. I learned a lot from this piece. Besides the comic pages, I'm also doing a series of fine art in this style. This was before I knew after the Krafttone brushes. #artshare #digitaldots #cmyk

Redid the coloring with my old BenDay patterns. Looks so much better now. The dots still aren’t the size of the original, but there is a limitation with the resolution. Using my BenDay patterns certainly helps the look. (Original—Crafttone dots—BenDay dots) #cmyk #comicbookdots #4cp #benday

First try with the Krafttone brushes. I’m supposed to be able to shrink the size and spacing but that’s still eludes me at this time. The general look is achieved. Brighter colors result from the white by and no fading of inks. #artshare #digitalcolors

Another inking study of Basil Wolverine. Every inker is different. It’s interesting studying the nuances of each style. Wolverton did lots of cross hatching. Some was difficult to duplicate digitally. I will color this with the digital cmyk. #artshare #digitalink

Leopard Women Riding Giant Saurians-Fletcher Hanks. Working on CMYK coloring with dots and lines. Pulling stuff from the back of my brain again. But it makes these old pieces look better with the actual style of coloring. #artshare #comicbookdots #1940scomics #cmyk

Here's a piece I did in the 2013—in the style of Barry Windsor Smith. Another of favorite artists. On her collar I added what's called "a random walk" line to give it texture. #tradart #penandink #medieval #artshare

A Favorite Ditko cover I wanted to study & redraw. Turned out less complex than I thought. Added in some zipatone for texture as I’m not coloring with CMYK yet. Procreate brushes still need some work. All in all I’m satisfied with the progress. #artshare

Another Ditko study (Face) with the addition of some digital zipatone. It's actually from my BenDay project but similar dots and line files. This allowed me mechanically tint some of the heads, not draw every shading line. It's an ongoing project and I'll be exploring it more in the future.

The splash page from the 3rd Dr. Strange story. These structure studies have shown me many traits of Ditko's inking I was unaware of. The difference from his crow's quill to his brushwork—his precision thin lines to his not so precise large shading strokes. Still so much to learn.

Wanted to make the little men stand out using a zipatone effect. The Procreate halftone didn’t have the right look. I pulled a BenDay stipple file I made years back. So far, it’s as close to zipatone as I‘ve gotten. Work will continue on the process. #inkart #procreate #zipatone #bendaydots

xkcd can be kishotenketsu 1. Intro of characters 2. Their thoughts on dark matter 3. Only gravity affects it so experiments are fruitless 4. Having a burrito never hurts This needs further research to see if thus pertains to any other of his comics

Another Ditko style study. What I run into is how to convert a color image into a b&w line inkart. Need to find more references on that. The original used color to show the man sucked into the gem it doesn’t show up as well with only lines. More techniques to learn.

Another sketch started but I’m tired and going to bed. The iPad makes this exercise easier… and cheaper as I don’t have to buy a tablet of vellum paper. I’ll finish this off tomorrow. I try other inking styles but keep going back to my beginnings. Think I’ll stay here for a while.

Been under the weather for a few days. Decided to do a sketch study from an old Ditko story, A Monster Among Us. Love the style of the monster. A practice session for me to to learn more or the artist’s style. The more I replicate it, the better I get drawing it.

Trump wants to put a 100% tariff on all foreign made films. Sounds like the most efficient way to destroy Hollywood.

hey #medievalsky free outreach idea: 2025 is the 50th (!) anniversary of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." reach out to your local theater and see if they want to do a screening. people still - rightfully! - love that movie. arstechnica.com/culture/2025...

Internet (seems to be) stable. Sitting on my balcony watching the Canadian gooses frolic in the creek. I missed hanging out on the balcony.

While waiting (once again) for the internet to be fixed, I thought going through some untranslatable words might be fun. Word: Age-otori (上げ劣り) Language: Japanese Definition: To look worse after a haircut, perfectly sums up a disaster haircut that makes you look worse than before.

Internet has been working … not working … working … not working all day. Comcast tells me they’re working on it. Hope it’s fixed soon.

PET PEEVE The way 'Content Creators' edit videos is to eliminate any pause between the last word of a sentence and the first word of the next sentence. They make one unwieldy compound word. And it's not just 1 or 2 people. It's almost unanimous. I can't be only person that this causes problems for.

Just started reading Station Eleven and one paragraph caught my eye. If the supply line collapses, there would certain things unavailable … like antibiotics. There’d be so many deaths from minor injuries. Right now it’s just having enough toilet paper. But it could escalate quickly.

At the start of school, I created a heading for each day in a different art style. This was a style copied from a small jigsaw puzzle I owned. Done in markers, it had a dayglo appearance. I still wonder how I had the time to do this nearly everyday with school and work. #60sart #petermax #sketchbook

A sketchbook sketch from around 2017. Jumpin' Jupiter, a 1950's creation of Basil Wolverton. He appeared thrice but had that Wolverton weirdness. He jumped between planets in the solar system. Reminds me of The Little Prince as he lived on a tiny asteroid. #penandink #tradart

Been feeling under the weather the last few days. So here's another Ditko panel with one of my favorite background patterns along with a woodgrain pattern. #penandink #artshare

Another Wolverton page from my sketchbook. Love his art and his goofy monsters. Need to do more monsters like this. #penandink #penart

#tarot a Day This manuscript had a distressed look that was difficult to replicate. Unsure why it looked the way it did but I finally figured it out. Originally, she was pounding a bird on the anvil. Don't have my notes handy but I think it was Mother Nature creating a bird. Anyway, it worked well.

While still doing cons, I tried to appeal to cosplayers to make comicbook splash pages. I liked how things turned out but it didn't go anywhere. I think it had potential but needed better marketing. After the posed photo, I would draw and ink then #digitalcoloring in #affinityphoto #penandink #cmyk

Not pleinair, but a gouache landscape. Before I got Procreate, this was my medium of choice. I enjoy both. With the onset of arthritis, the digital is becoming my medium of choice. But I will always paint in a traditional style because I like the look better than a pure digital look.

When I got #procreate I thought I'd give #digitalpainting a try. Checked out videos; I painted a few scenes. Stopped when I went back to my medieval art. I stopped tradart pleinair painting. Didn't like lugging things about. May see if using iPad outside is a possibility.

Along with my mentor, I created a Doctor Who network in 2012 for our Summer Institute. I shaved off a multitude of 2nd and 3rd level characters to make it readable. It was interesting to find who the most connected characters were. It was an enjoyable project. #datavis #networkanalysis #doctorwho

And to show I'm not a 1-trick pony, here's a gouache painting I did for school (1993) of robin. Gouache is more difficult than oils as mistakes are harder to recover from. My still-life gouache painting dropped off a bit after graduation.

Pencil sketch ~1993 Most of these old pencils were done between class and work. I had an hour or so before needing to clock in. I/m trying to get back to more pencils as they're versatile. Surprised how many were in my sketchbook. Amazing what you drop when you find a new artform.
