Gracie is a former research assistant on our wildfire team and incorporated traditional Anishinaabek knowledge into our fieldwork.
Kyra is examining post-wildfire ecosystem recovery and microclimatology in the @nobel-water.bsky.social for her PhD research.

My lecture highlights MAC Ecohydro Lab ECR-led research at the intersection of wildfire, climate, and carbon from the last 15 years. I also weave in references to Wayne's northern research legacy and the guidance and direction I learned from him as a professor, colleague, mentor, and friend. 3/3

Wayne was passionate about the north, climate change & teaching climatology. He was genuine, caring, & supportive. If you study northern lakes, wetlands, permafrost, water, or carbon there is a meticulously examined Rouse study that you should be reading. 2/3

The massies overwinter in peatland hummocks in a (resilience) zone below the 0C isotherm and above the water table. But snowmelt can flood small to moderate height hummocks.
Rachel Fallas has identified hummocks, peatland and catchment characteristics that are especially vulnerable to RZ loss.

While this snow sure has been great news for my enjoyment of cross country skiing & snowshoeing, it likely is bad news for the the eastern massasauga rattlesnake (a species-at-risk).

The last winter with this much snow and cold temps (2014-2015) coincided with a snake mass mortality event.

thanks for sharing these David. My first research job was in the HBL in the summer of 1988. I got intrigued by the patterned peatlands and stuck with peatland research ever since.

Colin and Emma are co-first authors on this paper which, with additional modelling work by Paul Moore, is a great foundational paper for a contaminated peatland restoration project led by @mercury-ecohydro.bsky.social

Inspired by a guest lecture I gave in her iSci course, #wundergrad Emma Tutt was motivated to take on the data set for her iBSc thesis.
New smelter-impacted peat cores were taken last winter and working with Colin @mercury-ecohydro.bsky.social she completed the remaining lab and stats work.

Our initial lab work was disrupted several times by lockdowns.
We transferred samples and eqpt to make-shift garage labs to keep the peat science moving forward.
Unfortunately, samples and data were lost or damaged in the transport process and when a freezer broke during a lockdown.
