Nothing pedestrian about making better communities through public transport. When I need to go fast, the bus is my freeway. Sidewalks, Transit and Life.

You might say I am the number one fan of Spokane Transit's Route 4. @transit.app

Spokane is creating a redevelopment plan for North Division, a 9-mile state highway currently occupied mostly by strip malls and low-rise structures. The future will include: 🏠 More housing 🚌 BRT w/ its own lanes 🚶‍♂️ Pedestrian improvements 🌲 More landscaping and trees

Always listen to the transit nerds.

HOT RESEARCH NEWS! Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor... Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

Tonight's transit scene.

Catching the City Line tonight.

Last transit trip of my day.

Let me break this down in kindergarten terms: - Buses cost money to run - Most of that money is driver wages - Less time stuck in traffic = less driver time, better passenger experience - Better passenger experience = more ridership - More ridership = more fares collected It’s a virtuous cycle!

Indianapolis proves that if people care about their transit system, and are willing to give its issues some thought, it gets better!

Beautiful brand-new duplex that wouldn’t have been allowed without Spokane’s middle housing ordinance.

In the UK, auto insurance prices dropped 16% in a year. A big reason: Lower urban speed limits Industry analyst: "Areas where 20mph zones have been introduced result in lower levels of claim frequency – a key factor in the cost of car insurance."

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

In case you're wondering, WA State bus networks ranked by ridership: 1) King County Metro 2) Spokane Transit 3) Sound Transit 4) Community Transit 5) Pierce Transit www.spokanetransit.com/press-releas...

Uncovered another year's worth of transit ridership data for Spokane. It's hard to imagine the explosive growth of Spokane between 1900 and 1910. The city nearly tripled in size (36K to 104K) and streetcar ridership grew by nearly six-fold.

It’s happening! Tonight, MTA Chair & CEO Janno Lieber unveiled one of the signs at the entrance to the Congestion Relief Zone. Tolling begins at midnight. Learn more: congestionreliefzone.mta.info

Just finished my personal annual ridership report, which goes to my direct reports on Monday. Compared to past years, my ridership looks lackluster, but I did reach my goal to ride over 60% of the routes in our system. My logged ridership for the past 15 years is just shy of 13,000 trips!

Wrote a story suggesting a fun New Years resolution: try commuting via transit - gift link

Waymo is peak American innovation. With way less money they could have built a reliable public transport network, but instead someone was like "what if we could find a way for empty vehicles to contribute to traffic too? There's no reason we can't have more cars on the road than there are drivers"

Such a pleasure to see the Spokane River during this morning's bus commute after my holiday away.

No matter who wins tonight Victoria Royals vs. Prince George Cougars game, the BC Transit Zamboni is the GOAT.

The idea of public transport was invented by philosopher-mathematician Blaise Pascal when he knew he was near death in his 30s. I love that such an accomplished thinker chose to devote some of his last lucid hours to drawing lines on maps. Beautiful piece by Taras Grescoe on Pascal’s legacy.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, DOUBLE-DECKER BUS ENJOYERS 🎄🎁 🚌

Portland’s Tilikum bridge (2015) was originally conceived as for rail but not buses. Today, buses on the bridge carry more passengers than the trams and light rail because they go to more useful places. It’s usually best to let buses use street rail lanes for maximum flexibility.

Nothing better than seeing misinformation being corrected by people with direct experience in a matter. In this case, bus ridership.

Good transit > free transit Invest in frequency and coverage. Create dedicated bus lanes. Make travel times comparable to driving.

Some cynics say it’s impossible, but the imperative act of reversing car supremacy is already happening in places around the world that have stopped making excuses, and started making progress. 32 cities (in 18 different countries) we visited this year that are making big changes to their streets.🧵

Good news for the climate, bad news for the state transportation budget: Washington residents are buying less gas for their cars. Washington State is no longer projecting gas usage to increase to the horizon year anymore.

This morning was WSDOT Secretary Roger Millar's final meeting as a member of the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board. Millar had some comments about the four-county region's potential funding priorities around transportation. Here they are in a thread.

As I finish researching each streetcar line, I generate an animated map showing how the route evolved over time. Here's the map for the Broadway line (1903–1948). And on the site, including a change log of corrections: pdx-streetcar-history.notion.site/Chronologica...

Tonight's connection between routes 1 and 4 was a great way to remind me how much I love this transit town.

Christmas gifts come in all sizes. Looking forward to what Santa brings to the bus garage this season!

Filled in some gaps on transit history in Spokane this evening, thanks to the Wall Street Journal's 1909 reporting on the Washington Water Power company.

Manito Park 🦃 Trot is about to begin!

If you want to help low-income residents, Better transit service > Free fares

Heard on the bus just now, passenger to coach operator: "If you're on time, you can stop. If not, I can tuck and roll!" Fortunately for the passenger, the operator's career and STA's insurance, the passenger was able to exit while bus was fully stationary. 😂

My morning bus commute, with its markers of civility and social, economic and racial diversity, creates positive momentum for doing good each day for my community. The view of falls is an added bonus.
