Nostalgia can be a trap, but these logos are undeniably cool. The flat and sterile aesthetic dominating design today is not interestingā€”itā€™s a symbol of optimization-driven design. A century from now, the early 2000s will be remembered as the uncreative generation. www.instagram.com/share/BAEXh7...

1/2 Open source is working exactly as intended, yet everyone seems surprised. I donā€™t understand the shock. The whole point of open source AI is that it removes control over who the winners and losers areā€”everyone builds on what came before. DeeSeekā€™s success is a consequence, not a threat, to OS.

1/3 The frenzy around DeepSeek online is fascinating, but much of the discussion is based on incorrect assumptions. The lack of skepticism from most commentators is especially surprising.

1/2 Iā€™m just a small being with limited power and energy, and thatā€™s OK. Itā€™s easy to feel pulled toward everything, trying to fix all the worldā€™s despair, only to get overwhelmed and escape into your phone, or TV, or mindless ā€˜self optimizationsā€™.

Iā€™m trying to like it, but BlueSky so far feels like the law school library.

1/1 The current narrative pushed by some in the AI industry, particularly those seeking government investment for electricity, land, and resources to power their AI models, is overly dramatic and misrepresents the state of the technology.

The descent into a caricature of a republic has begun. Itā€™s remarkable how many Americans proudly claim they read Animal Farm in school, yet so few seem to recognize the story playing out around them.

1/6 If President Trump issues an executive order extending the enforcement grace period for the TikTok 'ban', it's essential to recognize that this action is not unprecedented. The executive branch has long exercised discretion in enforcing laws.

Itā€™s fascinating to see how people who make a living staging TikTok dances and those who make a living posting bumbling hot takes online have suddenly become constitutional law experts, free speech advocates, and national security scholars since the TikTok ā€œbanā€ became the national story.

Imagine if people, the media, and regulators paid as much attention to fossil fuel companies, pharmaceutical giants, food retailers, predatory universities, for-profit medical providers, insurance companies, and law enforcement as they do to social media companies.

Many people donā€™t realize that having a monopoly isnā€™t inherently illegal. If you outcompete rivals fairly, youā€™ve done nothing wrong. Whatā€™s illegal is monopolization which is using anti-competitive tactics like price fixing, exclusive deals, or tying arrangements to acquire or maintain a monopoly.

I prefer rattlesnakes to online trolls tbh.

If TikTok shuts down Sunday, itā€™s permanent unless they divest or the law changes. If not, watch Apple/Google: their inaction may signal assurances from the incoming administration to stall enforcement while exploring legal changes or other strategies to keep TikTok running.

For years, Iā€™ve said the EUā€™s targeting of U.S. tech was excessive. Mounting evidence shows regulatorsā€™ actions arenā€™t rooted in firm ideals about fair competition or user privacy but are instead driven by a desire to punish (and tax) U.S. tech company dominance. www.ft.com/content/2c1b...

A feint is a deceptive maneuver designed to mislead an opponent about real intentions. But the thing about a feint is that it only works if itā€™s believable. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Snowy weekend in ATL. The bird feeders out front have been busy! Here are my resident Cardinal neighbors. They visit daily; rain, snow, or shine. šŸŒøšŸ¦ā€ā¬›
