Heard the garbage truck and threw on my coat and shoes to rush out to the alley to thank the garbage worker for working during the brutal cold this week. She gave me the biggest smile. Thank a service worker today.

Just in case you were wondering, being a widow on Valentine’s Day really does suck.

If you’ve already started calling it the Gulf of America instead of the Gulf of Mexico, you should have no trouble with someone’s preferred name and pronouns.

I keep thinking of the sense of creeping despair in the court of Meduseld, of Eomer being sent away by Grima Wormtongue because Eomer dared to urge that darkness be resisted, and of Eowyn telling Grima, “Your words are poison.” That is what today feels like.

I suspect it might be a very fun year when the last line of the first page of the new story I'm writing about bad corporations and hostile takeovers goes thusly: "Meanwhile, the squirrels, who had been busily organizing while everyone’s attention was turned away, discovered the usefulness of fire."

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come. ‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair. Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.
