Ah, parting.... I don't imagine I'll ever encounter this big lug again, but our chance encounters – every day since arriving in Barkerville – have been a delight. 😻

The cast at Barkerville's Theatre Royal takes a well-earned bow after this afternoon's performance of music and comedy. The show was great fun - witty, funny, warm-hearted and tender. Bravo!

Every building has many stories to tell. I think the key to this one's stories must be in the windows – where they are, where they were, and why they changed. The building's eyes have it.

Ottawa's Chinatown Arch is rightly famed. The 19th-century mining town of Barkerville, BC, has one too. It's less grand, but it is the gateway to a history that is too seldom told.

The sun rises on Barkerville, BC, this morning.

In the nick of time for #Woodensday: some old wood in Barkerville, British Columbia. Barkerville is an abandoned mining town of the 2nd half of the 19th century, now restored as a National Historic Site.

I've never seen anything quite like this. I'm looking forward to exploring it more fully tomorrow. Barkerville, BC, an old mining town now restored as a National Historic Site. @forrestpass.bsky.social, if there are ghosts here, now's the time to tell me....

Gotta love an authentic mid-century diner – especially when it's inside a train! Diner/Bunk Car, Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum, Prince George, BC.

This is Louis, a beautiful Crested Gecko whom I met this morning at The Exploration Place in Prince George, BC. Who wouldn't kill for eyelashes like hers?

For #MountainMonday: the Alaska Highway, heading west from Whitehorse towards Haines Junction (Yukon). #VacationInCanada

Interesting idea. I'm doing my bit - plan to be at a National Historic Site in a couple of days. Stay tuned. #VacationInCanada Even if it's a working 'vacation', as it is for me. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

A year ago this week, we lost St. Anne's Church to fire. But not before violinist Anne Lindsay had recorded an album there. Here's short excerpt from my new podcast with Anne, in which we talk about what it was like to record in this now-lost treasure. Volume ⬆️ carleton.ca/aah/2025/hta...

"We watched with reverence from behind our stoic masks as the kittens opened their eyes and took their first steps and began to explore the world they now shared with us."

The Swiss Cottage • Cahir • Tipperary This beautiful ‘cottage orné’ was built in 1810 by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall, to a design by the famous Regency architect John Nash. #Ireland ##SpéirGhorm

He inspired the Beatles to aim higher. If there's higher praise than that, let me know what it is and I'll use it. www.cbc.ca/news/enterta...

#WaderWednesday? Okay, I'm in.

Writing, producing meaning through the written word, is foundational to our culture. Doing it adequately has been a benchmark of education; doing it well a valued, if not valuable, skill. Using it to communicate knowledge, to make argument based on observations, underpins our economy & technology >

We lost so much when St. Anne’s Church burned down one year ago today. But there’s one important aspect of it that we get to keep. Every building has a voice. Thanks to a new album by violinist Anne Lindsay, we can still hear the voice of St. Anne’s. My new HTA Podcast: carleton.ca/aah/2025/hta...

It's #DoorsOpenOttawa this weekend! Check out some of the 90 buildings that are ready to welcome you. There are embassies, businesses, galleries, schools, theatres, gov't buildungs, religious buildings, and more. ottawa.ca/en/arts-heri...

What a splendid place to have to myself all morning! Trinity College Chapel, Toronto. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, 1955.

Major construction FINALLY begins this week at Somerset House, located at Bank and Somerset streets. This marks a significant turning point for the heritage property which lay dormant for 17 years after a structural collapse.

This is what happens when you put long knives in small hands. It's funny until someone loses an eye.

Interesting points here by @alexusherhesa.bsky.social. But it's possible to teach students how to execute ambitious projects, soup to nuts, within an academic discipline. I know this because we do just that in our History & Theory of Architecture program. higheredstrategy.com/effective-gr...

It's nearly a year since this beautiful and historic building burned down. On the night of the fire, I wrote this 'eulogy', which gained a surprising amount of traction. On the 1st anniversary (Monday), I'll have another chapter to add to the story of St. Anne's. carleton.ca/aah/2024/st-...

Giving away an ancient castle as a gift is like giving someone a puppy. Very exciting at first, but the realities of caring for it years into the future are quite unforgiving. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Today’s #CaminoTuesday theme is MUSIC ON THE #CAMINODESANTIAOGO 🎶 music is part silence, part poetry. Buen Camino

This week's #CaminoTuesday theme is close to my heart: MUSIC ON THE CAMINO. Here's some of the haunting music recorded on the Camino in 2004 by my late friend Oliver Schroer. The song is Le Tourment by Jean-Paul Loyer - a very rare example of a cover tune by Oliver. www.oliverschroer.com

We're one week away from the first anniversary of the fire that destroyed the beautiful and historic St. Anne's Church in Toronto. When that day comes, watch this space. carleton.ca/aah/hta-blog/
