Major construction FINALLY begins this week at Somerset House, located at Bank and Somerset streets. This marks a significant turning point for the heritage property which lay dormant for 17 years after a structural collapse.

Last year, City Council made the decision to provide development charge credits for designated heritage properties. City staff then led a coordinated effort to rebuild trust with the property owner to find a path forward.
Still in a holding pattern, but the property is on a heritage watch list. We have so few tools to compel a commercial property owner to actually develop. Working on it.
This is fantastic news after all this time. Thank you for all your hard work on this! Also of course, both the councilors before you who also fought for this ❤️

The renewed Somerset House will preserve its historic façade, add 14 rental units, include ground-floor retail, and contribute to local parkland.
This project complements broader city investments in Bank Street’s public realm and community safety, rolling out this summer.
While we’re here, what’s up with 330 Gilmour?
