My late afternoon walk on Greenham Common today was accompanied by several Woodlarks in song and this gorgeous Stonechat in the sunshine. #berksbirds

Very much where I stand on this. I was proud to be part of the @birdingclimate.bsky.social book. Proud of its Best Bird Book of the Year award. Proud of its initial reach and traction. But it really is time that the big guns in our community took the lead on the climate crisis and stopped hiding.

I hitched a ride with my friend John Froy yesterday on an errand to @wwtslimbridge. The Brown Hare was so close. Great to see the Russian White-fronted Geese still there, and 66 other bird species incl. Spoonbill, Bewick's, Whoopers, and 2 Little Stints. #ukbirding #wetlandsconservation #brownhare

If anyone would like a copy of this book and resides outside of the UK, please contact Peter 👇 and he will arrange international postage for you. It's a beautiful, well-written book.

Any day that starts and ends with a Barn Owl is a good day. #Ukbirding

Anyone want to buy a birding scope cheaply? I have a mint condition Viking ED pro 80mm scope, with a HD zoom eyepiece and waterproof stay-on case. I don’t use it at all, and it’s gathering dust. Would cost over 1k new, but I’ll accept much, much less to get it out of the way. #birdinggear

The Marshians have landed, again. The last workparty of the season on Fobney Marsh, stomping the area scythed last month. Now we await spring passage and breeding season with anticipation. The winter wildfowl were back on the water within minutes of our short intervention. #berksbirds #ukbirding

Here's the official cover for our Widdershins Walk book, with fabulous female House Sparrow by Geoff Sawers. It went to the printers yesterday and will be out in a couple of weeks. Limited edition of 300, with 115 already sold so get your order in quick (link in bio) #rdguk #widdershinswalk

Quick sketch of today's Hawfinch...

Did a quick recce at Theale Main Pit and Moatlands GP this morning, ahead of the Intro to Berks Birding walk I'll be leading on Saturday. 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Marsh Tit, 1 Goldeneye. Then to Aldermaston churchyard for the Hawfinch which has been around for three days now. #ukbirding #berksbirding

Blood on the Tracks is my studio listening while I make this limited edition woodcut print of Oystercatchers. It will feature in the new Widdershins Walk book, which goes to the printers this week. Original prints will be available to buy, when the ink is dry. #woodcut #printmaking #ukbirding

The latest video of our community guerilla habitat management project in on Fobney Marsh, just south of Reading town centre. It's so rewarding to see the birds arriving on the improved habitat. Today a Marsh Harrier. #ukbirding #berksbirds youtu.be/j1cwnWm28aw?...

Stumbled upon this from yonks ago. Owl identification made easy

On Wed 19 Feb, 7.30pm, Matt Prior will tell us about his inspirational work to support Wiltshire's Tree Sparrow population. Free entry. No booking required. Room 109, Palmer Building, University of Reading. Non-members welcome. Or watch online on Zoom: bit.ly/BOCZoom #ukbirding #berksbirds

A mentoring session in Netley gave me a good excuse to spend a few hours at Weston Shore, Hants this morning. I got distant views of Red-necked Grebe and Great Northern Diver, and a fairly close Long-tailed Duck. This Grey Plover was close enough to capture on my phone. #ukbirding #hantsbirds

A happy hour at Theale Main Pit this afternoon. Peregrine on the pylon, 4 Oystercatchers settling in for the breeding season, and a few Common Gulls around, pre-roost. #berksbirds #ukbirding

Sneak peek at 2 of my woodcut prints for the Widdershins Walk book, to be published in March. It's 126 pages. Going off to the printers next week. You can pre-order your copy to get it hot off the press at this link: www.peculiaritypress.co.uk/.../p23/widd... #ukbirding #berksbirds #printmaking

A beautiful morning to survey some of the large oaks around the village for potential owl roost holes. We also found a Snipe, huge flock of Chaffinches and Badger spoor along the way. #berksbirds #badger

A meeting in Kidlington required a drive up the A34, so I took the opportunity of a couple of wind-blown, showery hours on the Ridgeway at West Ilsley. I saw my first Corn Bunting of the year, 18 of them, plus 140 Chaffinch and 30 Yellowhammer. No SEO or raptors of note. #ukbirding #berksbirds

Bewick's Swan among the Whoopers beyond Lady Fen, @wwtworldwide.bsky.social Welney last Friday. As a teenage voluntary warden there in the 1970s, we saw Bewick's in their thousands each winter. Now it's just a handful, as the population mostly winters on mainland Europe. #ukbirding #norfolkbirds

Come to the next in our series of FREE talks: Wed 5th Feb, Room G44, Edith Morley Building, Uni of Reading. Lee Barber works for the BTO coordinating structured ringing schemes. Admission is free. No booking required. Refreshments provided. Or join remotely via Zoom if you prefer bit.ly/BOCzoom

East Anglia trip: 86 species in two and a half days, despite storm Eowyn. Welney WWT today produced the goods, as ever. Bewick's Swan, Short-eared Owl, Common Crane, Cattle Egret, Tree Sparrow... Thanks @sjr62.bsky.social for hosting me. #ukbirding

East Anglia trip: after Holkham and Titchwell today I've seen 74 species in one and a half days. Ruff and Barnacle Goose were highlights, (plus so many Pink Feet and Marsh Harriers!) Tomorrow my old teenage patch, Welney WWT, could add another 10 species to the list. #ukbirding #norfolkbirds
