It'll be two years, this Monday night. Time, at last, to write about Agnes.

I recently heard a high-profile pundit argue that the Trump movement cannot be Fascistic as -its supporters don't wear uniforms; -Trump dislikes foreign wars; -he hasn't tried to amend the Constitution. It's a dangerously complacent view, that misses the sheer gravity of the current situation. 🧵

The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world. They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

I'm sorry, as much as I am enjoying this spat, how can you take seriously someone who spent 100s of millions of dollars electing Trump, then went to work for Trump, left government just days ago praising Trump, and is now calling for Trump's impeachment. Just unserious people.

This is incredibly sad, Peter David is my favourite writer for my favourite Marvel character, The Hulk. The End is such a brilliant exploration of the Hulk/Banner's predictament. Farewell to a comics legend.

Comic book legend Peter David passes away at 68 RIP Peter David.

Good thread on British Prime Minister's speech on immigration.

The candidate of the pro- European, reality-based center in Romania is ahead of the candidate supported by Russia and the international far-right. Just an exit poll, but still

BBC muzzling one of its best presenters from making an excellent, wholly factual programme because heat pumps are “controversial”. An organisation badly in need of new leadership.

The year is 2038. Texas has just completed its third nuclear strike against Oklahoma. In Washington, Elon Musk's Legion Of Children is engaged in a last stand in the DOGE basement. In London, the Conservatives warn that an agreement to sell cheese to France is putting at risk a US trade deal.

“It is 1949. The Labour government is nationalising the steel industry due to market failure.” “It is 1967. The Labour government is nationalising the steel industry due to market failure.” “It is 2025. The Labour government is nationalising the steel industry due to market failure.”

Let the Chinese languish in the 18th century industries of chips, smartphones, computers and personal electronics - safe behind the tariff wall, the US shall regain superpower status by dominanting the jobs of the future: little paper napkin and sock manufacturing.

The past four Republican administrations have tanked the US economy. But I know multiple Democrats who include their pronouns in the footer of their emails. I have never felt more politically homeless.

the reporting on it didn't really do it justice. the way he talks about race and class diversity, and how you build a shared identity through connection, is a message we don't hear enough of people in his position. everyone who works with young people in the UK today should watch this

Someone must be volunteering to be Jamie Lannister pretty soon, right?

At least we will no longer need to go back to the decision to simultaneously invade Russia and declare war on USA as the stupidest thing ever done by a leader of a modern major state.

Forgot I was on a phone call about council tax Them: What band are you in Me: Erm, The Charlatans Them: Your council tax band? 😬

My working theory of current American politics — big Republican donors and media backers are happy for Trump to do as much culture war stuff as he likes, as long as he keeps taxes on rich people low and the business is environment “friendly” — is about to get a workout thanks to this tariffs plan.

Guys, I've got a great idea for a historical movie mash-up.

I would like to share my review of 90's near future thriller Strange Days. While it didn't accurately predict the technology of today, it did correctly suggest our unhealthy relationship with it. A great movie. www.thehindsighthut.com/post/strange... #strangedays #filmreview

My point here is not so much that Trump might not try and run, but how it should be covered journalistically. It would be illegal for Trump to run. There’s no legitimate way around it. Entertaining the prospect, as if there’s some clever way around it, lends the idea legitimacy.

man can you imagine being like a regular reporter at the Atlantic and getting to work today thinking ohhh boy, managed to get a nice little scoop this week, fun story that'll make some waves, can't wait to tell my editor, then your boss's boss turns up with.........this

The publishing companies behind iconic characters Dennis the Menace, Roy of the Rovers and Judge Dredd are among the founding members of Comic Book UK, a new trade association launching to drive growth in the UK’s comics industry

See, it's funny cuz it's true. 🤣 (also: #sad) 😞

BTW-- reader reviews still matter. If you liked Absolution, consider leaving a review on your go-to site.

They’re tearing out the walls looking for the cathedral, and they’re doing it because the GOP knows its been doing wingnut welfare for decades and is looking for the same thing in its opposition

Who seriously believes these people will ever hold a real election ever again? www.nytimes.com/2025/03/17/u...

As Rogue Trooper fan, I can't wait to see this film.

The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy. Nonetheless, holy shit. What’s remarkable is that there’s hardly any real news driving this. It’s just investors belatedly realizing that Trump is who he is, and always was.

I asked my local comic shop about how they would be affected by any US sanctions, and I learned about this amusing state of affairs:

It seems incredible to me that Rupert Lowe is in the news with Reform. I always thought he was odd ever since he made former England RFU coach Sir Clive Woodward technical director at Southampton FC in 2005, which is like Michael Johnson becoming a baseball player. It's the wrong sport mate.

Strange how halting military aid to Ukraine and blocking intelligence and data sharing led to more Russian strikes

Well.

This is a very clear eyed view of the current situation and well worth a read.

The "minerals deal" is basically meaningless. There aren't lots of minerals in Ukraine waiting to be dug up by eager American miners. open.substack.com/pub/arthursn...

It was good to talk to Ian Collins on Talk TV about how people become English - and why it is good for identity & integration when we do -in the face of the absurdity of Suella Braverman's hunch that it prob takes five or six generations to start to be possible www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIiG...

Most economists(including me) would probably endorse @drodrik.bsky.social's optimistic view of the internal contradictions of the Trump coalition (and share his hope that they will tear it apart). Not sure historians of fascism/authoritarianism would? www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/t...
