Water companies’ pollution incidents in England increased by 30% in 2024. Customer bills hiked. Shareholders extracted £1.2bn in 2023-24. Industry controlled by organisations with criminal records. No director prosecuted. Nothing will change until profit motive is removed. Nationalise.

A fraud team with uniforms, badges – and a striking resemblance to police. We investigated and published the story. Now, following public scrutiny, the council has quietly scaled it back. J.J. Jackson reports #TruthToPower

“The UK is prepared to retain some regulatory alignment with the European Union and accept supervision of the bloc's court over a deal to cut checks on imports of foods and agricultural products” Good. Our future is with Europe 👏 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Britain told a generation that protest was pointless, disruptive, even un-British. Now, facing broken systems and a burning planet, that generation is starting to raise its voice. Stacey Richards reports.

Economist Peter Schiff: “The crash that's now happening in the bond market has more dire implications than…the stock market. If these tariffs remain in place, the US could have a full-blown financial crisis by the fall that makes the 2008 Financial Crisis look like a Sunday school picnic.”

The shocking reality is that the UK is going backwards as a direct result of Brexit. Apparently, reality no longer matters.

Forcing people back into the ‘workplace’ is a good way to destroy productivity.

Democracy for sale.

Perhaps there were signs he is incompetent

The EU is advising citizens to be crisis-ready and have food and water in storage. What is the UK doing for preparedness?

🇫🇷🇪🇺🇺🇸 The war begins. President Emmanuel Macron has just called on big European  businesses to freeze all investments in the United States in retaliation for the “brutal and unjustified” import duties imposed by Donald Trump. 1/

In under 4 months I've gone from zero to 3,000 followers on bluesky. It took ten years to do that battling against unfriendly algorythms on twitter. This article seems to have been particularly well liked here

A stretch of Norfolk river in The Broads National Park has been declared a sewage hot spot. An Anglian Water spokeswoman said: "We know our customers will be disappointed to see an increase in our storm overflow data this year" Via BBC

Quick reminder: Le Pen wasn't found guilty because the French courts hate democracy. She was found guilty because she broke the fucking law. open.substack.com/pub/iandunt/...

We evidently need to distinguish between "Trade skirmish" and "Trade war"🫢 Great thread!

The government has published no evidence to suggest that cutting disability benefits will get people back to work. The evidence it has published found that these cuts would plunge hundreds of thousands of people into poverty. I’m joining @trusselluk.bsky.social in calling on the gov’t to rethink

As Polly Toynbee states so well here, Labour needs to cast aside its fear and govern boldly. It would do well to start by revising the draconian anti-protest legislation; enacted by the Tories, but left untouched by Labour. It really isn't a popularity contest! www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

"If a multimillionaire paid 2% more in tax, they’d still be a multimillionaire. But for a disabled person losing PIP, it’s the difference between survival and destitution." A damning letter to the editor.

Loss of EU students due to Brexit and leaving the Erasmus+ educational scheme is damaging a UK university system already suffering from real-term funding cuts. Restoring Freedom of Movement and rejoining Erasmus+ should be on the UK government's agenda. kentandsurreybylines.co.uk/politics/bre...

"The UK is increasingly impoverished. Nothing works. Yet we are 6th largest world economy."

Something tells us that "Clactose-intolerant" is going to stick 🤣🤣🤣

Osteoarthritis and the pain and stiffness it brings is unpleasant. NHS frontline services need to improve to help us manage the condition @oscarwoofs.bsky.social tells her story.

A letter to the editor highlights that a 2% wealth tax on multimillionaires could raise £24bn – without touching ordinary families. Instead, the government is slashing disability benefits. Who are they really protecting?

After 2008, the system failed, and now we’re left with a crisis of truth. The technocratic approach isn’t enough. It’s time to offer a vision that speaks to the people writes @stephenmcnair.bsky.social #SundayLongRead #Technocracy #Populism #PoliticalVision

Welfare cuts for the poor/disabled were not in Labour's election manifesto. PM Keir Starmer said: “those with the broadest shoulders should bear the heavier burden”. Then hit the poorest. Biggest cuts since those imposed by Tories in July 2015. There is no economic/moral justification.

A 2% wealth tax could raise £24bn, yet we're cutting disability benefits instead. Who are we protecting?

After years of hesitation, Europe is transforming its military - without waiting for the US. The money is there, the will is unshaken and the bus is leaving. Where’s the UK?
