When Zelenskyy was a television actor in Ukrainian sitcoms, did he ever dream he'd have a starring role in Godfather IV?

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Gwan the kneecap 🤣🤣

We have almost no cycle lanes in the city centre, which is where almost every bike station is.

Today in unsurprising but important news: Building bike lanes increases bikeshare usage doi.org/10.1016/j.jt...

“A new study of early separated lane projects in the U.S. across six cities finds a rise of ridership between 21% and 171% after the lanes were installed.” The pretty strong and convincing case for protected bike-lane networks in cities. In @fastcompany.com

“While Mayor, I was often asked ‘how have you been able to afford bike-lanes in #Copenhagen?’ I’d reply, ‘how have you been able to NOT afford it? 25 years ago we were a few days away from going bankrupt. So the city invested in the cheapest infrastructure… bicycling.’” — @mortenkabell.bsky.social

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people. Sound efficient? HT @ellenmacarthurfdn.bsky.social

This is brilliant!! 😂✊🏼

Food for thought.

In Leuven for a few days and saw this..

Great piece. Agencies and individuals in positions of influence continue to prioritize drivers' feelings and perceptions of convenience over actions that will actually improve road safety.

Next time someone tells you we can't have infrastructure because of 'disabled people' show them this.

After an election of missed opportunity and the news that charities can no longer feed people on Dublin's streets, I wrote about #GE24, soup, Kneecap and how we must bring together a divided republic if we are to have any chance of a united Ireland. ourmaninstockholm.substack.com/p/to-unite-i...

Crossings are a health hazard for people at this stage... There isn't a week goes by when I'm crossing with bike that a car hasn't near ploughed into me

Been absolute carnage on the roads, and it breaks my heart. Something has gone terribly and uniquely wrong for road safety in Ireland.

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%. E-bikes support fewer car trips. V/@lloydalter.bsky.social

At least 2,700 cyclists had to be admitted to hospital from emergency departments or attend for medical treatment after an accident over a two-year period

Winter doesn’t have to be a barrier to biking if your city invests in a network of protected, connected and cleared bikeways. 🚲 ❄️

Road violence in Ireland is a problem so bad that it should be treated as a public health issue. "More than 2,700 cyclists treated in hospital after road incidents over two year period" www.thejournal.ie/more-than-27... #RoadViolence #RoadSafety #Cycling #SpéirGorm

Why do the Dutch use red asphalt for all of their cycle lanes, streets, and intersections? “A result of using the materials around them, a desire for a cohesive road network in an attractive urban environment, and most importantly a willingness to invest in safety.” dutchcycling.nl/knowledge/cy...

“A Christmas miracle”: Limerick Mayor says closing bus lane for motorists to use it cannot be justified “at this time” Limerick's directly elected Mayor, John Moran, has said that, given the feedback received and policies in place, he "cannot justify the pilot requested" to close the bus lane on…

Maybe it's just us, but removing one of the deterrents to dangerous driving behaviour doesn't sound like a great idea for a body charged with making the roads safer. How about a fine, penalty points AND a speed awareness course? #RoadSafety #RSAIreland #WhyNotBoth www.independent.ie/irish-news/e...

Limerick traders are struggling because not enough people are living in the city—not because there are not enough cars. Public transport plays an essential role in a thriving city, facilitating easy and efficient movement for residents and visitors alike. 1/2 irishcycle.com/2024/12/04/a...

A handful of traders, supported by like-minded councillors, are attempting to use Christmas trading as an excuse to open the bus lane permanently on O’Connell Street, #Limerick. Forget about the yes-no poll—email your support to maintain the bus lane to [email protected].

In terms of mobility, e-bikes are selling faster & having bigger effects on emissions than EVs, much less self-driving EVs. And yet they get vastly, vastly less attention. www.fastcompany.com/90994141/why...

Just normal, happy, and free people going about their lives on foot and by bike in prosperous, modern Amsterdam. Everything drivers and businesses claim will happen if we reduce cars in our cities is a lie.

My 2 cents: The echo of the Scottish Independence referendum result here is hard not to hear. The older generation has declared “we hold what we have” even when it clearly means that the generations coming behind are denied the opportunity for change and better.

Penneys in Limerick are collecting donations for the Children’s Grief Centre. You pick a tag off the tree, shop it, pay for it and then donate it. Such an easy way to help a charity. ☺️

Beautiful Wintery cycle day this morning by the river

If you or a member of your family use a bike to commute, please read this before you vote on Friday. #ge24. Thank you, Irish Cycling Campaign 🙏

I've now heard from 12 households on Limerick's northside that Willie O'Dea canvassers suggested they give their #ge24 no.2 preference to Frankie Daly rather than Dee Ryan, the other Limerick City Fianna Fail candidate. They're the only 12 I asked. Quite the coincidence, innit.

Sneaky behavior in Galway west as Catherine Connolly is not included in the ballot woeful stuff from #Seoige #GE24

FINE Gael scrambled to deal with Simon Harris's interaction with a care worker with frantic messages to RTE to over how the broadcaster planned to handle the now-viral video. Chilling RTE declined to comment on the accusations of pressure being put on them by Fine Gael #GE24

A huge thank you to the Irish Cycling Campaign volunteers who examined the #GE24 manifestos! We hope this will help inform cycling voters on Friday!

Just to add to this cos I often see it come up You don’t need your polling card to vote. As long as you are on the register (check here: checktheregister.ie) you can vote. So if it got lost in the post or you forgot it, don’t panic. They have the full list at your polling station. Just bring ID.

“Dual-mode households (cars & ebikes) can reduce their car use by 19% compared to those solely reliant on cars, particularly affecting shorter trips. This supports households moving to one car and adopting a ‘car light’ lifestyle.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social  momentummag.com/study-shows-...
