I never saw the landfill crowd as 'jangly' they tended to be more 'nu rock' or 'weatherspoons pub rock'

I always found one of 2 things about 'alt' it tended to be a bit more commercial, produced but tended not to sound like the mainstream of the day (until it became it so was alternative to nothing) 2) it could be heavier appealing to heavy rock/metal fans. I always knew the difference in my mind

I wonder if it was the influence of the UK where 'indie' existed in the 80s as a catch all term and 'alternative' 'college' was never used. Then 'alternative' became a description for indie bands on major labels after the Nirvana goldrush and bands wanted to disassociate themselves from that?
