I hope I get to see some of my online friends in real life when I appear with Rob Lyman at the wonderful @chalkefestival.bsky.social tomorrow morning. We open our session with a provocative question: Was Britain always the good guy in WW2?

1/3 The untold story behind National Service. From 1949 - 1963, two million British men did military service mainly to retain control over British colonies, because “Indian independence in 1947 meant that Britain no longer had the huge Indian Army at its disposal”. www.nam.ac.uk/explore/what...

Writer @claremulley.bsky.social on the final years of a remarkable life of struggle. From this weeks new episode of @mongerspodcast.bsky.social

The brand new episode of @mongerspodcast.bsky.social on the remarkable WW2 Polish heroine Agent Zo - and so much more - with @claremulley.bsky.social is available now youtu.be/XOZy46M3Ntc?...

Grateful to my new friends at the Military History Society of New South Wales for printing my account of how the Vietnam War began with decisions made in Paris and London. One of the things I will be discussing in Australia later this year. And there's much more in the book!

Why has the latest episode of @mongerspodcast.bsky.social attracted 5.5k views on YouTube in just four days? Sorry @GillHornby but we think the answer is obvious…

Feel very flattered that @si-rubinstein.bsky.social has given 1945 The Reckoning such a positive and interesting review - and pleased to be in the great company of Sam Dalrymple. @alanlester.bsky.social - your name comes up too! engelsbergideas.com/reviews/how-...

In the latest @mongerspodcast.bsky.social writer Gill Hornby talks about her new book on Jane Austen’s family The Elopement - and zombies!

Terrific conversation this week with writer Gill Hornby all about her imaginative new novel The Elopement, and getting under the skin of Jane Austen’s extended family. youtu.be/mHFvqgl8Ivc?...

If you are currently planning your time at @chalkefestival.bsky.social do please consider dropping in on Rob Lyman and me on the Thursday morning as we delve into some of the darker corners of 1945, and discuss what I call 'imperial muscle memory'.

For today's #HistBookChat, I was put onto this new book by @philmcraig.bsky.social from his two appearances with @ww2tv.bsky.social on #WW2TV at www.youtube.com/@WW2TV/searc.... Purchased it today. Should arrive in time for vacation reading.

Delighted that writer Gill Hornby will join me on Sunday on @mongerspodcast.bsky.social to talk about her latest - and brilliant - book, and her continuing literary exploration of Jane Austen's family.

Seriously tho, I think 'Complex, messy, harrowing but ultimately victorious' may have to go on the paperback cover @hodderbooks.bsky.social

Some reviews mean more than others. Genuinely touched that a family member of Angela Noblet liked the book. She is one of the great characters I enjoyed ‘meeting’ while researching it, and through her diary I also learned all about naughty ‘Dutch Husbands.’

"At a minimum he has reminded us how terrible war can be." Braham Dabscheck reviews @philmcraig.bsky.social‬'s 1945: The Reckoning: War, empire, and the struggle for a new world: newtownreviewofbooks.com.au/phil-craig-1... ‪#BookSky 💙 📚

The best deal in the history of English literature. Come and wine, dine (sort of) and hear me and my amazing Mother in Law speak about her life in 1945-48 Dawlish and a truly astonishing WW2 story. @devonlife.bsky.social

If anyone is in striking distance of Dawlish next Wednesday do join me for a special evening.

People ask 'Are you sure the 🇬🇧 govt released Japanese POWs to fight under British command in 1945?', because it seems so unlikely given how we like to remember WW2. It wasn't exactly a secret at the time but my bet is that hardly anyone in the UK today knows this story from my book. Am I right?

Many thanks Matt! I wasn’t certain how much pre war stuff readers would enjoy/tolerate but to understand how both acted during the war I felt it was important. Also it has some jokes!

Super proud of this new Amazon review
