A provocative slide from the powerpoint. It's going to be a lively session I think.

But it won't all be so serious. For example Rob has agreed to sing a rather rude sAustralian Army song with me, so if you are coming maybe pack your earplugs!

My father just missed out on Malaya, for whish he was truly grateful. The truly scandalous story of UK nuclear testing in Australia is one that's very under-told, in both the UK and Oz. I know as I tried and failed to get a film (working title 'Blowing Up Australia') made for many years.

Wonderful photo and how remarkable it must have been to take to the air then, just a decade or so into the age of powered flight.

One reason I think we need to know stories like this - apart from a desire for history ‘warts and all’ - is that formerly colonised people remember them v well and it affects their views of the UK to this day. Surabaya is commemorated in Indonesia as a National Holiday for example.

VEDAY80 was great - let's celebrate that victory over evil. But as 2025 progresses there are other anniversaries, some after the formal end of WW2. These stories are darker and more ambiguous and do not sit easily with the way we like to remember WW2 here. So I wanted to write about them too!

Hurrah! And if you want a signed one I can probably do that and post it for less than the price they charge at Waterstones.
