This has taken an age…

Beer in Art #1487 At the Workday’s End, by Harry Anderson, 1941 (Illinois, United States)

Happy days. I’ve secured some funding to host a focused knowledge exchange event around what can be done to help sustain ours pubs 😊. Hope you may be able to attend @charlotte2153.bsky.social @matthew-wright.bsky.social @plunkettuk.bsky.social @bbpa.bsky.social @campaignforpubs.bsky.social

My old workmates the @thinkingdrinkers.bsky.social are off on a tandem ride from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise awareness of the plight of Britain's pubs. Look out for them, and if they come your way, hide! www.youtube.com/@TheThinking...

The new book from @morrighani.bsky.social has just plopped through my door - thanks @camraofficial.bsky.social. Expect a review soon, probably with some grunting about ‘why I don’t like beer festivals’. I can tell you now, though, that’s a wonderful cover by @simonjgane.bsky.social

In which I lambast Guinness for the historical errors in its announcement of its Open Gate brewery project in Covent Garden, tell you more than you wanted to know about the massive brewery that once stood on the site, and reveal the origin of the insult "berk" … zythophile.co.uk/2025/05/26/n...

Big D seems to be back - with some space opera thing going on with the packet. #Basketmakers #Brighton

There are more important things but the Wetherspoons baked beans ramekin controversy is a sign of the times 👇 wp.me/p15p2Q-eb9

Sam Smith’s has closed a pub that’s been open less than 9 months. A note on the door suggests the brewery objected to pics of the pub being posted on social media. Having seen some of these, the pub looks so gorgeous I would think that was irresistible www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

After that disappointment, winding down at Beer & Burger, Willesden Green.

On my way to Wembley. #coyos!

Beer of the week in today’s @dailystar.co.uk? Hakata Pale from the magnificent @orbitbeers.bsky.social

The latest issue of Ferment Magazine is entirely dedicated to #Italian beer, so it won’t come as a surprise that it features a contribution from yours truly. 1/3 #birraartigianale www.beer52.com/ferment

I visited Belfast regularly for Bass in the 90s, and then for The Publican Awards in the 2000s, and, though it could get edgy, I always enjoyed the pubs. This makes me want to go back - soon.

Following a successful launch over here, Beer Breaks in Britain is officially published in the United States today! www.bloomsbury.com/uk/beer-brea...

Very sorry to hear of passing of Ken Don, former Youngs Head Brewer. Ken was a fine brewer& played a leading role in saving Maris Otter Barley when delisted by farmers. He also did a great job recreating the Youngs beers when they moved to Charles Wells in Bedford. Lovely convivial man. RIP

Got mine today. Have you? @philmellows.bsky.social @katesimon.bsky.social

Going to have to face the fact I just don’t like beer festivals. Much happier chilling at the Balance taproom with a glass of their @pelliclemag.com collab saison Bine.

Craft beer sexing up Reading… sorry, The Ding. Double Barrelled Brewery at Manchester Craft Beer Festival.

Hey friends, I've written a newsletter about stubby beers and why we still love them. I've also pulled the boat out and included two interviews and some specially commissioned original art (from a human). So if you like it, share the love! open.substack.com/pu...

Splendid tribute by @rebekkiie.bsky.social in @pelliclemag.com to the great work that many micropubs, like this one, are doing for their communities: www.pelliclemag.com/home/2025/5/...

Important: @jonnygarrett.bsky.social has written about the crusade to give cask ale UNESCO Cultural Heritage status. Why does it matter? Read on and find out exactly why cask deserves to be recognised as a culturally significant part of British heritage! www.pelliclemag.com/home/2025/4/...

The latest costs crisis faced by pubs is encouraging a turn away from food towards wet-led operations. Here's a good example from today's Morning Advertiser: www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Article/2025...

Will's update on the White Horse, Parson's Green, brought back some happy memories of a great pub, made possible by the persuasive partnership of Sally Cruikshank and Mark Dorber. Sad that it's not what it was but outliers like that seldom survive that long.
