Proper taproom at First & Last Brewery in Bellingham. (There’s also a cosy bar and beer garden.)

Tasty, tingling one from @kernelbrewery.bsky.social ft. a new hop variety - Krush Spring Ale (4.1%) at the Haus on the Hill #Brighton

Oliver Pyle - A pint of Harveys, the Cricketers Arms. #Watercolour

Excellent to see my home town of Llandudno (and nearby Conwy) featuring as a beer destination in the sparklingly joyous ‘Beer Breaks in Britain’ by @philmellows.bsky.social and @katesimon.bsky.social

What excites me most about this is the structure. But I’m just an old formalist.

The American Craft Beer Timeline

In which I write about familiarity and pubs, with starring roles from the Nelson Head in Horsey and the Blue Bell in York atjpubs.substack.com/p/the-clamp-...

How could 2 craft breweries (New Belgium and Bell's) put out more beer than 9 craft breweries backed by the biggest multinational macrobrewer in the world? In my column this week at @vinepair.com, I laid out why this was a long time coming for Anheuser-Busch—and why Molson Coors is next.

Done!

New post up on Beer Diary — rounding up contributions to #TheSession on the topic of beer and pubs in art and fiction. My thanks to everyone who participated; I think it's a great set of observations. (We don't yet have a host for June, so if you have an idea, let me know.)

Back when I had my Serious Eats beer history column, Martyn was always helpful and kind as could be, even with corrections. Just lovely all around.

New post up on Beer Diary — my personal contribution to the "beer in art and fiction" edition of The Session, which I'm hosting this month. It's a look back at an obscure series of The Muppets, which I partially loved for its excellent pub, plus bonus scenes from Deadloch and The Umbrella Academy.

Now we're fully into beer festival season, @philmellows.bsky.social reviews the new book from @morrighani.bsky.social on what has quietly become "a great British tradition". Though personally, of course, he'd rather be down the pub britishbeerbreaks.substack.com/p/get-in-the...

Beer in Art #1487 At the Workday’s End, by Harry Anderson, 1941 (Illinois, United States)

Happy days. I’ve secured some funding to host a focused knowledge exchange event around what can be done to help sustain ours pubs 😊. Hope you may be able to attend @charlotte2153.bsky.social @matthew-wright.bsky.social @plunkettuk.bsky.social @bbpa.bsky.social @campaignforpubs.bsky.social

My old workmates the @thinkingdrinkers.bsky.social are off on a tandem ride from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise awareness of the plight of Britain's pubs. Look out for them, and if they come your way, hide! www.youtube.com/@TheThinking...

The new book from @morrighani.bsky.social has just plopped through my door - thanks @camraofficial.bsky.social. Expect a review soon, probably with some grunting about ‘why I don’t like beer festivals’. I can tell you now, though, that’s a wonderful cover by @simonjgane.bsky.social

In which I lambast Guinness for the historical errors in its announcement of its Open Gate brewery project in Covent Garden, tell you more than you wanted to know about the massive brewery that once stood on the site, and reveal the origin of the insult "berk" … zythophile.co.uk/2025/05/26/n...

Big D seems to be back - with some space opera thing going on with the packet. #Basketmakers #Brighton

There are more important things but the Wetherspoons baked beans ramekin controversy is a sign of the times 👇 wp.me/p15p2Q-eb9

Sam Smith’s has closed a pub that’s been open less than 9 months. A note on the door suggests the brewery objected to pics of the pub being posted on social media. Having seen some of these, the pub looks so gorgeous I would think that was irresistible www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

After that disappointment, winding down at Beer & Burger, Willesden Green.

On my way to Wembley. #coyos!

The latest issue of Ferment Magazine is entirely dedicated to #Italian beer, so it won’t come as a surprise that it features a contribution from yours truly. 1/3 #birraartigianale www.beer52.com/ferment

I visited Belfast regularly for Bass in the 90s, and then for The Publican Awards in the 2000s, and, though it could get edgy, I always enjoyed the pubs. This makes me want to go back - soon.

Following a successful launch over here, Beer Breaks in Britain is officially published in the United States today! www.bloomsbury.com/uk/beer-brea...

Very sorry to hear of passing of Ken Don, former Youngs Head Brewer. Ken was a fine brewer& played a leading role in saving Maris Otter Barley when delisted by farmers. He also did a great job recreating the Youngs beers when they moved to Charles Wells in Bedford. Lovely convivial man. RIP

Got mine today. Have you? @philmellows.bsky.social @katesimon.bsky.social
