"Deep down, my hope is that this book makes it easier for education, as a field, not to get swept up in whatever the latest innovation-of-the-day is (eg MOOCs, makerspaces, the metaverse, generative AI) and, instead, to respond with questions: ... www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/buildin...

Re-sharing this interview I did with @jbpleasa.bsky.social about my book, Building the Innovation School, for this week's @civicsoftech.bsky.social newsletter. If the themes are of interest, you can still register for tonight's CoT Book Club discussion (8ET): www.civicsoftechnology.org/events.

Let's talk about this idea of "innovation" in schools. What does it mean? How does it play out? Who decides what's innovative? @jbpleasa.bsky.social talks with @philnichols.bsky.social about "Building the Innovation School" - our next book club book! www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/buildin...

Our special issue ‘Rents, assets and governance in digitalised education’ is now published! Check it out: www.tandfonline.com/toc/cjem20/c...

Grateful that I got to think through “platformed privatization” with @philnichols.bsky.social in our newly published chapter in the Research Handbook on Education Privatization and Marketization! Check it out!

New chapter with @alliethrall.bsky.social on "platformed privatization" — i.e., how platform technologies smooth the way for private interests to secure footholds in, and control over, public education. www.elgaronline.com/edcollchap/b... Paywalled, but as always, reach out if you'd like a PDF!

Join me and @philnichols.bsky.social tonight!

Check out this upcoming book - that ToC! - edited by @philnichols.bsky.social and @anterobot.bsky.social. Thanks to @jmhiggs.bsky.social and @sepehrvakil.bsky.social for the chance to collaborate and consider where a literacy framework may be useful - and perhaps less so - for computing education.

Check out my and @philnichols.bsky.social's teaser for the next Civics of Tech book club, discussing The Propagandists’ Playbook by @ftripodi.bsky.social! Join us on February 18 at 8pm EDT (registration link in blog post)!

Get geared up for our February book club: The Propagandists' Playbook by @ftripodi.bsky.social! In today's blog post, @philnichols.bsky.social and @alliethrall.bsky.social put the book into conversation with ongoing debates about media literacy. www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/whose-m...

🟨New Publication in #LMT 🟪 In this paper @philnichols.bsky.social, @charleswlogan.bsky.social & @anterobot.bsky.social examine #Luddism to consider what lessons it holds for how education research and practice might confront #AI automation. Read more: tinyurl.com/3ysb8a4z

New article from me, @charleswlogan.bsky.social, and @anterobot.bsky.social on the evolution of "Luddism" as a social identification and its potentials (and limits) for organizing resistance to automation in education today. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Paywalled, but reach out for a PDF!

*New publication alert* Writing with @philnichols.bsky.social and @anterobot.bsky.social, we trace three waves of Luddism to articulate the possibilities - and pitfalls - of a contemporary Luddite identity and praxis in the struggle against automation and obnoxious machines in education.

Excited to share that @ftripodi.bsky.social will join us to discuss her incredible book, The Propagandists’ Playbook, for our next @civicsoftech.bsky.social book club, hosted by me and @philnichols.bsky.social! Grab a copy and register at www.civicsoftechnology.org/events to join us on February 18

Read my, @charleswlogan.bsky.social, and @philnichols.bsky.social 3rd and final (for now) post in the Civics of Tech parent blog series! This was a real labor of love thinking through my own role and commitments as a parent to advancing more critical approaches to edtech in schooling.

I'm late to the party, but @philnichols.bsky.social et al.'s piece on #AIliteracy deserves attention. GenAI is not just another sociotechnical change that #literacyeducation should respond to. It's underpinned by imaginaries that require us to take a critical approach to AI. doi.org/10.1002/rrq....

For @nepc.bsky.social, I reviewed the new Bellwether report on AI in K-12 education. Tl;dr: as with much written on the topic, the report’s focus on AI’s projected benefits over empirical evidence re: known risks makes it of limited use for policy/practice. nepc.colorado.edu/review/learn...

Had the privilege of reading an early version of this book and have been eagerly awaiting the official release. Such a powerful study; and beautifully written. #Literacies folks, in particular, will want to check this out.

AI's in everything, incl. schools, so it'd be wise to explore risks along w/benefits. A recent report focuses on how AI can help w/admin tasks & personalize instr. But a new review warns that the report fails to grapple w/evidence about the thorniest issues. nepc.colorado.edu/publication-... #edusky

Last year at the Institute for Advanced Study, I had the great pleasure of convening an amazing group of multidisciplinary scholars on the topic of the platform in society. One of our collective efforts was "5 Theses on the Gravity of Platforms" www.ias.edu/stsv-lab/fiv...
