If you live in the United States, you are in greater jeopardy today than you were 6 months ago. So is your family. So are your friends & neighbors. Virtually all the important parts of the U.S. government created to protect us are being shut down, gutted, or marginalized. — @djrothkopf.bsky.social

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

Last February, I led a proposal submission that encompassed six months, hundreds of hours, four institutions, a massive team, and and 256 pages. NSF just informed us that the entire Biology Integration Institute program was archived and our proposal would not even be reviewed. With a form email.

How come every pronounces GUI as "gooey" but nobody says "klee" for CLI?

We are not a legitimate country.

“A deranged maniac impersonated a police officer and killed lawmakers but if you’re an immigrant be sure you immediately comply with plain clothes people who won’t identify themselves telling you to get in a van”, what a fuckin country

Another tortured lipid membrane representation, this time featuring an inter-leaflet vacuum

'US science is suffering a destruction from within.' Andrea Sella explains why he returned the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday prize over their inaction regarding Elon Musk’s membership. #ChemSky #SciSky #ScienceSky

I told you we’d be back

The other day someone looked at me with confusion when I suggested they run their python code outside a notebook. Jupyter has been a disaster for code literacy.

All events have probability 1/2. Either it happens or it doesn't.

Durbin to Bhattacharya: "I can't understand it. I disagree w/ this admin on so many things. But this is the one that really gets to me personally. To think this nation would walk away from medical research. For God's sake...cancer, your budget requests a 38% cut to the National Cancer Institute"

Based on some quick math, this alone could fund the NSF Plant Genome Research Program for ~4 years; the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, which was totally axed in the NSF budget request, for ~9 years; and ~ half the total NSF GRFP budget

CNN’s Jason Carroll was zip-tied and escorted away—for reporting the news. But they claimed he wasn’t under arrest? Why are they shooting rubber bullets at and silencing journalists? We still have a First Amendment.

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT. CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open. DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open. CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are. DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

Australian reporter Lauren Tomasi was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet by an officer in Los Angeles:

Four LAPD officers on horseback surround a man laying on the ground, trample him, and beat him with their polycarbonate "saber" batons.

What did these poor lipids do to deserve this representation

These few comic panels by @zachweinersmith.bsky.social depict my mental state way more often than I had hoped possible.

We just got an email that Hopkins is freezing salaries, hiring, and some construction projects. In addition to the 800 million USAID we lost, we’ve had another 50 million in grants canceled so far. And a 2/3 year over year decline in funded grants despite an increase in submissions

Going to the hospital because I broke my wrist smashing the endorse button: www.understandingai.org/p/i-got-fool...

Toad sipped his tea. “Frog,” he asked, “are you making this up?” “Maybe yes and maybe no,” said Frog.

Johns Hopkins not having a university-wide Overleaf site license is bonkers to me. And somehow it's the engineers who care enough to have it? Those in the school of arts and sciences have to buy their own licenses. Guess it's back to local compilation and git repos for large documents.

Had to log in to outlook 4 times today before it would let me see my email. Close the tab, close the browser, doesn't matter, you just gotta keep logging in bro. Please wait while we log you out. Now enter your password again I swear it'll work this time bro. Be sure that you've closed all your brow

Just watched this adorable idiot hiss at himself in a mirror and act very confused at the result.

I’m excited to finally share our new preprint! Membrane-associated assembly processes like CME function as precisely-tunable, spatially targetable, robust on/off switches that don’t require energy at decision-time. arxiv.org/abs/2505.17290 🧪
