President Trump and right-wing politicians in Europe have railed against trans rights. Britain’s Supreme Court has now added its voice to the discussion, ruling on Wednesday that the legal definition of a woman under the country’s equality legislation is based on biological sex.

Excellent work and presence of @sotonpolitics.bsky.social convening. Thank you and sorry I missed it this year.

📣New in the The Lancet Regional Health–Americas! We show how Venezuelan women flee because they are mothers, driven by hunger, violence & health needs. But transnational motherhood, precarity & trauma erode health. Migration policy must centre on and redress this www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

New in Lancet Global Health! Making the case for regional cooperation to lead effective & equitable global health responses. International aid is as vital as defence spending – cutting either undermines British security | Emily Darlington

Glad this is out (and kudos to Afifah)! Very timely: it is argued that regional organisations can offer context-specific, equitable responses to global health emergencies ...but they must be better integrated into global governance to overcome multilateral limits. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Have no mistake, the same wealthy extremists who helped propel Trump into the White House are pumping money into UK. All those who celebrated Trump discriminating against trans and non-binary individuals need to realise it's also women's rights they're coming for. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

“USAID built a vast array of programs to help families foresee and adjust to climate shocks without migrating,” I told the @nytimes.com. Ending those programs “leaves migration as the only viable way for many families in the Western Hemisphere region to cope.”

Deporting individuals just for irregular entry is illegal and undermines due process to determine refugee status, and international principle of non-refoulement. In Venezuela political repression, economic collapse, and human rights violations continue. Returning people places them at grave risk.

⚠️ New open access publication alert ⚠️ We reflect on the situation of Venezuela women in Brazil to reflect on gendered policies in humanitarian settings and whether they are able to protect displaced women. More below, and questions/comments are welcome

Out now! A timely piece w brilliant colleagues. We offer a critique of humanitarian aid when delivered as paternalism, especially when tied to securitised migration. But recognise its role if protection centres on migrant women autonomy and meaningful inclusion journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

this is the point: Trump’s actions are particularly targeting women’s health, notably sexual and reproductive health and rights, and human rights of (forced) migrants. Solidarity, advocacy and policy coordination, including regional organisation, is a must. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

40,000 health workers in Kenya affected. 5000 Ethiopian Ministry of Health workers already laid off due to USAID closure www.nytimes.com/2025/02/08/w...

Regional organisations need to step up to the so-called transactional diplomacy, which is nothing but forcing agreements that are harming rights of people, particularly migrants. www.refugeesinternational.org/statements-a...

I wrote this on the humanitarian impact of the US aid suspension in Latin America. Cuts to vital programmes risk exacerbating displacement, instability, and rights violations.

Canadians have long assumed that the US would never deliberately seek to harm Canada. That assumption has been shattered.

💯

The opposite of health sovereignty… Milei declared its intention to leave the WHO due to ‘profound differences’ in health management, and to uphold national sovereignty in health matters. The withdrawal becomes effective one year after formal notification. www.reuters.com/world/americ...

Venezuela has one of the largest global refugee crises, and the largest in Latin American history because of Maduro. Of course he said he will accept people returned, he's the one they are trying to escape. This is the absolute definition of "refoulement", and illegal. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Watched The Brutalist this weekend. Brilliant film. Takes you to the intimacy of trauma without being overly dramatic. Captivating (felt the same as when reading Isabel Allende’s books)

Both the salute and the mentioning of manifest destiny were not muscular or verbal misfortune

Un discurso mesiánico, delirante, peligroso y abiertamente xenófobo. elpais.com/us/2025-01-2...

We need to stop convicted felons and sexual abusers getting away with absolutely anything - including abusing democracy

As many migrants arrive at borders confused, exhausted, demoralised, in limbo, and with very little resources including or legal counsel, the new policy risks wrongfully sending people back to countries where they could face harm and even death. www.azcentral.com/story/news/p...

This is heartbreaking to the core. The photo will probably make the photo of the year, while the mother, the baby and many forced migrants will like be made legally and socially invisible www.reuters.com/world/europe...

Greece, along with Frontex, is known to carry out illegal "pushbacks". When you have an already traumatised kid potentially being the victim of one it is unsurprising their memories will be "inconsistent". That's what trauma does. The case should at least be heard. www.irishtimes.com/world/europe...

👉 It's "Red meat" for his followers and distraction for media, but "the real reason why he’s doing that is to place single pressure on Panama to clamp down on immigration, and particularly to close down the Darién Gap". During the 20th C, the USA indirectly limited and sometimes directly attacked the possibilities of democratization of most Central American countries. The current threats to Panama are not more of the same, but there is something of that as well.

Where there is a will, there’s not always a way. Milei and Bukele threatened with #plebiscites. AMLO called them but it didn't help much. Fujimori and Chávez got what they wanted. #populisms are very similar (by definition) but their results are not so much. Reviewing the archive rb.gy/yjmxqz

Another extraordinary book that takes you into race, slavery, Haiti, and New Orleans, while exploring the essence of womanhood. It takes you on an emotional journey through the brutal history of slavery and the enduring legacy of colonialism. A powerful story and story teller.
