The Elusive Shift quotes someone from the 70s saying, “We played D&D the other night with Runequest rules.” The real cultural shift will be if/when “D&D” is no longer synonymous with “TTRPG,” at least outside the community.

I mean, you can’t be that surprised that people came out of growing up in the eighties, the objectively worst decade, and were screwed up. Only so many of us recovered.

Not that this applies to your critiques, but there are a lot of complaints that would disappear if the critics asked themselves, “If they’d started with this in 2014, would I be complaining about it?”

I mean, this was them improving on the first two editions.
Don’t forget that crafting magic items cost xp, which I believe was meant to slow down the casters, to give a little more 1e/2e flavor.

Somebody wasn’t giving out enough Mauls of the Titans!

Is that really incompatibility? You can choose what goblins you’re using and move on. A better example might be the naga in 1e Cult of the Reptile God; her permanent charm power is central to the plot, but it doesn’t exist in 3e or later.

That characters from the previous edition can be used in the new one with minimal tweaks. Some seem to think that “backwards compatible” means “no change,” which obviously conflicts with what it means to have a new edition.

I had a similar reaction to abilities on backgrounds, but my experience when making actual characters does not feel so stifled. One effect of moving ability modifiers is that they are now based on something you used to be (background) instead of what you are (species). That’s a big story difference.

Agree that both are bad at this; I was just curious how 2024 edged out 2014+ for worst!

True, but at least bastions give you *something* to purchase. Am I missing something that 2014 lets you buy that 2024 doesn’t?

2024 weaker than 2014? I would think (the possibility of) bastions and crafting magic items would give 2024 the edge.

Definitely a fun one. I think you might also like another card game, The Game. Cooperatively playing cards in order, with limited communication.

My bank required a fax for something a couple of years back, ironically to confirm that a payment had been accepted that I made through the online banking portal.

A lot of 2024 changes aim to eliminate those corner cases, including See Invisibility.

The MM issue is more of a side effect of the general rule. JC gave the RAW answer, but IIRC he understood that many tables would do otherwise. And you’re only rolling a handful of d4s for MM if you’re targeting one creature!

Eldritch Knight and Psi Warrior get a nice benefit from this as well. It just means you’re not expecting to ever get 20+ STR.

400 seems very cheap, but you can have STR 18 by 4th level, and STR 20 by 6th for a fighter, 8th for others. It’s still a bargain, but ironically not for the characters who value STR the most.

I think of it as changing what your thing is about to grasp onto some emergent tangentially-related phenomenon. Fonzie jumping the shark was Happy Days going from 1950s nostalgia to “Fonzie the superhero.” But maybe the phrase has evolved to encompass more or to be more generic?

This is a great conversation, but, at the risk of being pedantic about a meme, has “jumping the shark” changed its meaning? Maybe this is “jumping to conclusions?”

I don’t think it’s awful, but there shouldn’t be three backgrounds that give you the Skilled feat.
