Bring it on Mark Carney!

Well done.

This morning I brought food to an elderly neighbor who is incontinent. While helping her into her wheelchair, I got pee all over me. This afternoon, I wrote a letter to a former student who is incarcerated for a serious sex offense. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but somehow, interacting

If you’re connected with NOAA’s GLERL, or other Great Lakes teams affected by federal cuts + shifts, I’d love to hear from you. I’m a ProPublica reporter in Michigan with a longtime interest in water. Background: www.propublica.org/people/anna-... and www.annaclark.net Signal: annaleighclark.14

Well, there goes my dream of studying Enterprise Risk Management at Columbia this summer.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

After 3 surgeries, a blood clot, infection & being hospitalized for over a week, the moment I was discharged I rushed to the airport so I could get on a plane to DC & vote NO on Republicans’ disastrous budget plan. Rep. Pettersen traveled from Colorado with her newborn son so she could vote NO. 🧵

Make calls to Dems this morning, please! I just called Rep. McClellan.

If the test of a theory is its predictive power, then Trump-Russia is the most robust theory in all contemporary political science.

Main thing I'm taking from the German election result is that Musk and Vance support for the AfD made no positive difference whatsoever. In the current scheme of things that really matters.

My facebook feed is full of accounts that look like real catholic church accounts saying the pope has died. As near as I can tell, he hasn't. I find this interesting, not particularly troubling in this instance, but troubling in the efficacy of spreading false information.

If you are a federal employee in Minnesota and have thoughts about this, drop me a line: christopher at minnesotareformer dot com

Hey, RVA, we need one of these in our city too. @standupforscience.bsky.social

My pretty little radicchio soaking up the sun.

I am a proud member of AAUP for many reasons, but the fact that we are participating in this important lawsuit is one of them. Anti-DEI Executive Orders have been put on hold, as of today, y'all. Fellow university profs, please join AAUP if you haven't already. democracyforward.org/updates/judg...

UVA students are gathering outside the rotunda to protest a closed meeting of the board of visitors scheduled to discuss the fate of gender affirming care at UVA hospital

Higher Ed friends, this is a big one. www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

NEW: In a further sign of turmoil at the NIH, Mike Lauer, who oversees the agency's $39 billion extramural budget that goes to research outside the NIH, has resigned effective tomorrow. This comes after top NIH official Larry Tabak abruptly retired yesterday.

Terrifyign news that undreds of federal employees havebeen fired from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which oversees the U.S. nuclear weapons fleet and works to secure radiological materials worldwide.

This is the kind of story that we need to keep sharing. This vague "DEI ban" will affect so many of us in so many different ways. Even rich kids at red state private schools.

Question to bluesky: is there already some good text on the impact of what's going on in the US on five eyes? Last time I checked with someone working on intelligence the worry was that you could not share info with Austria - but the CIA sending buyout offers to all of its staff and Gabbard...?

Great news!

Virginians -- since our AG Jason Miyares didn't sue, the judges order doesn't apply to us. He's up for re-election this year...

The circumstances are “we’re not sure if there is a Federal Trade Commission anymore and we’d like to try something”

RVA people, please consider attending this interesting and important event next week about the growth of hyperscale data centers in VA. My very smart colleague Mary Findley-Brook (@geoyapti.bsky.social) has been a leader in helping us understand the social and ecological impacts of these centers.

Link to info on Title 1 fund distributions no longer works on the Department of Education Page. Is Title 1 funding on the chopping block now? https://www.ed.gov/laws-and-policy/laws-preschool-grade-12-education/title-I

Trump just terminated the Chair of the Kennedy Center and has installed himself as the new chair. He says he will now be dictating the institution’s “art and culture” and says it “must reflect” what he chooses.

Three Wins Today (Feb 6, 2025) 1. OK R state Sen got so much pushback for a bill to force families to pay for and provide support for their child with disabilities. So he pulled the bill. 1/2

And yet, data centers? Somehow not worried about THAT locality cash grab. Virginia House targets speed camera ‘cash grab’ • Virginia Mercury

Might as well share tiny bits of good news where available: I have heard that an NIH study section (the groups of experts that review grant applications) slated for March was recently confirmed to still be on. They were stopped under the comms freeze, and obv things can change.
