Authoritarianism advances gradually, using what Hungarian dictator Rákosi called szalámitaktika ("salami tactics"). Each step advances their goals just enough to cause outrage, but falls short of provoking widespread organized resistance. It's the essence of Niemöller's "First they came" poem.

Just had my antibodes tested to confirm my MMR vaccine is still offering good protection. Cost $11 at my doctor's office to have peace of mind. There's a special circle in hell for parents who deny their children this protection.

I was totally invested in this, hoping there would be a happy ending. Well damn if some reddit stranger didn't go to her house and CLIMB all the way up the tree today and rescue that cat! Don't give up on humanity just yet.

THIS. If 4-5 GOP members of House and Senate could find their spines and honor their oath to protect the Constitution, they could caucus with the Dems and reinstate checks and balances. The cult of MAGA is a lost cause, but I remain hopeful that some "reasonable republicans" are actually patriots.

Also: the board's recommendations on shareholder proposals tells you all you need to know about the integrity of this company. I mean, you know it's bad, but to see them actively discouraging measures that could help with regard to workers' conditions, packaging, climate impact and AI? 2/2

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.
