In our recent paper, Anvar Sanaei shows that root traits of 'absorptive fine roots' relate to tree growth! In fact, they are better predictors than traits of 'transport fine roots'. www.nature.com/articles/s42... But there is more to it... 🧵

Nature research paper: Latitudinal scaling of aggregation with abundance and coexistence in forests https://go.nature.com/3CUTWWg

These two people are very dear to us 🥳 Such an inspirational PhD defence today! Check out Eleonora’s work on functional trait spaces: rdcu.be/eaNox

It’s hard to carry on with daily life when all hell breaks loose in the world. So small joys are so important now - look at this cutie that my student Lauri Laaspere put together! Can you guess what is going on? #soil

We are hiring! We have a vacancy for a 2-year postdoc in our department @niooknaw.bsky.social to work on plant and soil community dynamics in long-term experiments in natural grasslands. More info can be found here: nioo.knaw.nl/en/vacancies.... Please spread the word!

📣We're currently recruiting a soil biology postdoc interested in nutrient cycling in grassland systems at Teagasc Johnstown Castle, Wexford, Ireland with @aaronfoxirl.bsky.social #TeagascJC Further details and link to apply topjobs-teagasc.thehirelab.com/LiveJobs/Job... closing date 13/02/2025

📣New paper out in SBB co-authored by our own Gerlinde De Deyn, and many others. Nice collaboration led by @au.dk, Denmark and School of Ecology in China. A metanalysis proposing a new root-trait framework to design plant mixtures for SOC in agroecosystems 🌱. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

🌳🌳🌳 We have a new paper in @pnas.org showing climate warming leads to growth decline in beech because it drives trees to reproduce more frequently. Climate change can cause growth decline even when drought isn’t increasing by shifting where trees allocate resources doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2423181122

So happy to see it finally published! Phylogenetic distance between plant species can affect plant-soil feedbacks in different directions and effects are species-specific.

We are looking for more collaborators who want to run a BugNet site in their region. If you are interested, join our online info event. Please re-skeet, and help us to reach community ecologists, and those interested in plant- herbivore and plant-pathogen interactions around the world! 👇

New paper alert! We find evidence of greater selfing rates in in an annual wildflower after 8 generations of cultivation on a native seed farm: doi.org/10.1111/mec....

New paper out! 🌳 🌲 (and this one is very special to me) ➡️ Diversity boosts forest productivity also (and especially?) through its effect on the number of trees within forests besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... @journalofecology.bsky.social @cnrsoccitanieest.bsky.social More ⬇️ 1/7

Happy New Year! 🥳 Let’s be kind to each other and always look on the bright side of life! Any resemblance to a real person (Rev no 2?) is coincidental

We had such a wonderful day baking, exchanging gifts, sauna and marathon dancing 💃 Ready for a well-deserved break 🎄Happy Christmas everyone!

Really cool study showing host effects on AM fungal communities over time and connecting them to plant growth and P uptake outcomes! 🤩

It was so nice to visit @unibern.bsky.social @wslresearch.bsky.social and Tuebingen and interact with many brilliant ecologists last week! Looking forward to new adventures that might spring out. Thanks for the invitation!

So glad to see more attention drawn to the negative impacts of land abandonment on biodiversity! Our PlantSoilAdapt project aims to assess the impact of abandonment and intensification on grasslands - will be sharing our work here! Hello, Bluesky community 💙
