“Children are often overlooked by decision-makers”. This is important. If we truly care about children’s well-being, we must create environments where they can be safe, playful and mobile! @playingout.bsky.social 1/3

“We need to move beyond talking about play areas and towards talking about playful neighbourhoods. The best playgrounds are completely wasted if children can’t safely get to them”. Thank you @timrgill.bsky.social

He then added, “I grew up in poverty. The wonderful thing about playing outside is that it’s free”. Hear hear! @tomhayesmp.bsky.social

“We have an opportunity here to make a real difference. Restoring play to children’s lives is something Government can DO”. 👏👏👏@tomhayesmp.bsky.social

Impassioned speech from @ndironsmp.bsky.social opening the Play Commission launch, setting out the importance of play and the impact of its loss. “Is it any wonder children are so unhappy in this country?”

Lots of national media coverage about Play Commission today. Our Co-founder Ingrid on 5 Live and Leeds play street activator Catherine on the Today Programme alongside @annelongfield.bsky.social (link below - 2:48). Getting the word out!! www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

We’re proud to be part of this important commission alongside @annelongfield.bsky.social & Paul Lindley OBE. Looking forward to launch in House of Commons later today.

The @cfyounglives.bsky.social Play Commission publishes its interim report today, making the case for more play in more spaces for all children and calling for a national play strategy and a play sufficiency duty. So good to see play on the agenda. www.centreforyounglives.org.uk/news-centre/...

Sick of car adverts that use nostalgia of childhood freedom to sell the vehicles that have stolen children’s freedom? This from @thewaroncars.bsky.social is the antidote! 👏👏👏 @playingout.bsky.social youtu.be/_0MVCyOjvtk

If only rats *were* the main problem. Much easier to deal with than cars. 🚗🚗🚗

Whilst parks are great, we have long argued for the importance of communal/shared *doorstep* space for children's everyday play - space which tends to be more 'grey' than 'green'. Great to now have this summary of the evidence from @alisonstenning.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Some good news!! Fingers crossed this will be spent well and make local streets that bit safer for children to get out and about. @chrisboardman.bsky.social @sustrans.bsky.social @livingstreets.bsky.social www.gov.uk/government/n...

Free webinar: How can we create a more child-friendly built environment? Thursday 13th Feb 10-12. Should be good! @timrgill.bsky.social @thetcpa.bsky.social www.tcpa.org.uk/event/child-...

Crazy that girls today are still (or again) having to battle such sexism and stereotyping. In similar vein, can we also recognise that many girls want to play sport/skateboard etc and not just have “places to sit”?! www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/2491486...

The #EastBristolLiveableNeighbourhood #EBLN has tamed Beaufort Road to the point that we’ve been able to restart our #PlayStreet @playingout.bsky.social ❤️❤️❤️

There is much to criticise about a “build, baby, build” approach, and @georgemonbiot.bsky.social does! But, as always, *children* will be the main losers of more thoughtless, profit-led house-building, both now and into the future. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Massive, polluting, and dangerous SUVs are becoming the norm in the UK. There's a better way. Today, we launch the SUV Alliance with a 5-point manifesto for safer and fairer streets without SUVs Manifesto 👉 suv-alliance.org.uk

For decades, we have placed responsibility for “road safety” onto children, teaching them that if they just follow the rules - like crossing on a green man - they will be safe. But then drivers….

Street play and playgrounds are not an either/or - children need and deserve it all: doorstep space for everyday play, walkable streets/routes *and* "third spaces" like adventure playgrounds where they are both safe and free. www.historyworkshop.org.uk/family-child...

All but forgotten (though still legally in existence in many places) - and a legacy in the active and successful #playingout movement that seeks to restore children’s freedom to play out in the streets and spaces where they live playingout.net @playingout.bsky.social

We had another really successful @playingout.bsky.social Play Streets Forum this morning, discussing how to navigate the sometimes tricky waters of social media around #playstreets and engage communities, with Child Friendly Leeds' Rowan Beaumont talking about their very positive experiences.

The article is not as blaming as the headline but gives little attention to the huge generational loss of freedom and outdoor/community life that has made children more isolated, lonely, anxious, depressed and, yes, less resilient. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The APPG for Cycling & Walking is asking "Who is currently prevented from enjoying the full benefits of active travel and why"? Deadline this Monday. Our response will point out the particular impact of unsafe streets for children. Please respond even briefly if you can! appgcw.org/2024/11/12/a...

Children's physical activity levels remain abysmally low, hugely exacerbated by inequalities. The ONLY way to turn this around is to build in free play and movement to children's everyday lives. This means child-centric, not car-centric, planning. Read more: www.linkedin.com/posts/playin...

It was wonderful to hear Ian Byrne MP talking so strongly about the importance of playing out for children. "Looking back, we realised how lucky we were. We didn't have two ha'pennies to rub together but we had freedom and green spaces, and we were healthy, and I absolutely adored it". 🙏

We’re on our way to the House of Lords to help launch this crucial report. A huge opportunity for Govt to turn the child health crisis around by creating environments that enable them to be outside near home - active, happy and part of their communities.

Do we love dogs more than kids?! This article echos what children and parents *of all cultural backgrounds* have told us. Limited but valuable car-free/green doorstep space can be ruined for children by dogs. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We are hearing a lot about the impact of social media on children’s well-being. Should the UK follow Australia’s lead and simply ban under 16’s from using it? But in all this debate, we must look at the other equally massive - and deeply connected - factor impacting children’s lives…🧵👇

I really enjoyed this chat, finding common threads between big advertising and car-culture, how both have impacted children and what we can do about it. Thank you Adfree Cities 😊 NB. If you haven’t heard the @playingout.bsky.social origin story, the first 10mins might be interesting!

This is almost unbelievable from Johnson. A slightly bizarre rant which says nothing about cars, or 15 years of Tory austerity and disinvestment, or growing (right wing) intolerance of young people. Would like to see what the streets he was playing on looked like.

Yes this is absolutely about the church not about car culture and the privatisation of public space

“Children don’t play out anymore” says ex-PM who, during covid, stopped children from playing outside whilst encouraging adults to go to pubs. Somewhere in this latest weird rant there’s a nugget of truth about children’s health - but let’s talk about the issue seriously.

Alison was an “early adopter” of play streets and has become a huge part of the movement. Not only supporting hundreds of sessions but focussing her research on the topic of children/streets/play/community. Look up her work!
