Hopefully I will be able to flesh this out someday (in my long-stewing book project on blacklisting in the music industry), but I truly believe that McCarthyism remains one of the most central domestic cultural politics of the 20th century and still shapes the air we breath in the arts.

Philly, this is this Friday and Sunday!

I shouldn’t be like this on a Sunday morning, but Penn Alexander’s tradition of doing a big 5K race with commercial sponsors (mostly realtors, of course) and support from the Penn police to raise even more money for their heavily subsidized “public” school full of wealthy families is just gross.

Whether it is tomorrow or some other time, Philly will have its turn at some point. I have no doubt that the community will turn out, but skeptical that the Parker administration will rise to the challenge. Hope I’m wrong.

will be curious to see if Roth’s wesleyan follows; it would be on-brand, but they are unique in NESCAC in having (small but reasonably serious) graduate programs in the sciences.

Just to recap, the apartment building next to my kid’s school that used to be affordable housing until a greedy landlord evicted everyone for “renovations” and then left it vacant for years, is currently on fire.

It’s not that I’ve ever been one to be super invested in the dignity of the American project or something, but sometimes when I remember that DOGE is named after an old meme involving a Shiba Inu, I do feel a slight sense of mourning.

My wife and I are taking five children to six flags today. Pray for us.

Everytime some Democratic politician or consultant calls for a big tent approach like this, I think about how the party treated the Uncommitted movement last summer.

luv 2 find hope in the resentments and slight interstitial policy differences of the two most powerful men in the world. 😔

Somewhere out there a Bay Area liberal is thinking to himself, “see, this is why I didn’t sell my Tesla, I knew Elon would come around” and I hate him.

Played pickleball with three other middle-aged dads for an hour; feeling very…hailed.

I like to casually tell jazz colleagues that I used to play with Anthony Braxton.* *took MUSC101 with him as a freshman and didn’t understand a word he said for the third of the semester he taught, but it did involve playing instruments together at some point.

Just once I’d like the garbagemen to praise me for how neatly I put out my trash 😔

Fond memories of a professor at my undergrad reminiscing about meeting Edmund White back in the day. “I slept with him, of course…but then, we all did.”

New niche corner of TikTok revealed to me by the algorithm.

Just learned that my 11-year-old lost his school ID and SEPTA pass in…September.

@fetterman.senate.gov making a rare quasi-public appearance in…Boston…televised on Fox News…chumming it up with a Republican senator…all sounds about right! www.inquirer.com/politics/pen...

This very describes the norm at my non-elite institution. I made a personal resolution last year to make sure I always assign at least one UP volume to each class, often a monograph. Even for big non-major courses.

niche neighborhood question—was it ever established who made those “this is west philly, university city is a marketing scheme” stickers? I remember seeing them circa 2007, and there are still occasional remnants.

luv to use the protected bi-directional bike lane to get to Bartram’s 🙄

If you know any current or rising college students (broadly defined!) who live here in the Cedar Park neighborhood (narrowly defined!) of west philly, please encourage them to apply for this wonderful, long-standing scholarship opportunity. www.cedarparkneighbors.org/scholarship

Placidly arriving for my daughter’s spring ballet recital under that impression that it will be short and sweet, only to see that it is in three acts and features 24 different classes 😱😱😱

Come by, west philly.

🙌🙌🙌

This is definitely going to be a tight, efficient 45 min set.

I just…don’t know what to do with the information that King Charles did a land acknowledgment.

will to live being slowly sapped by middle schooler’s science project due tomorrow morning. Thanks a lot, project-based learning. 😔

Our block is hosting a pre-teen punk band for porchfest this Saturday at 1pm, and you should check it out! They are called the Owl Talons, ages 9-12 and write their own songs.

not the point of this skeet but reminds me of when my grandfather died and he wanted his ashes scattered atop a mountain in the ADKs that is one of the most annoying and difficult climbs in the region, so we, uh, chose a different, smaller mountain. 😬

honestly quite depressing to see the NYT publish an essay today that so closely mirrors this. Not a question of plagiarism, I assume, but a collapse of that public sphere in which an author and a bunch of editors simply haven’t read an essay that so many of us were raving about a month ago.
