I celebrated Father’s Day the traditional way by shaving my balding head all the way to glossy skin, trying to thread the needle between various toxic masculinities, but my eldest child really hit the nail on the head :“oh, you kind of look like your dad when he had cancer. Before he died. ” 😬😭

If Mamdani wins the primary, it will absolutely be another Indira Walton situation with the city’s ruling class going all out to make sure anybody else, even Eric Adams, eventually assumes the office, and I’m already depressed about it!

Now, me personally, were I to host a military parade, I wouldn’t mind some desultory shuffling, but if I were aspiring to be an authoritarian dictator I feel like I would have specified crisp marching in lockstep?

One of my longstanding fussy musicologist things is pointing out that in cultural studies the meaning of a text is often up for grabs by its consumers no matter what the artist intended, which is often empowering, but DEAR GOD.

tfw your mom joined in the “Fuck Trump”’chant.

All of West Philly is out there walking their dogs before the rally.

I didn’t have high expectations for Mayor Parker on the issue of “leadership in the face of fascism” but alas she has underperformed them nevertheless.

Hey, @fetterman.senate.gov, just curious, do you think anyone specifically was at fault for what happened to your friend and colleague?

When I was in fourth grade, I was a superfan of the Beach Boys, and my parents blithely took me to see them perform, and it was a horrifying experience. It was their Kokomo era, with an extremely creepy Mike Love fronting a Brian Wilson-less band with a bunch of bikini-clad dancers. Nightmare.

You’ll forgive a micro observation about Brian Wilson from an aging doo-wop scholar:

The new owner of a big expensive house in the neighborhood installed a large copper sculpture in their front yard, and it’s like…oh sweetheart…

I shall be attending this Saturday’s march in Philly, and I hope you will too! www.mobilize.us/nokings/even...

I was doing peer review for an extremely rigorous European funding process and I just know they were all rolling their eyes at my trite Americanisms 😭

I think the main thing to remember about political consultants and pundits and academics is that they are jealous that you actually believe in something.

I still remember when these buildings were full of families and my kids’ classmates.

Hopefully I will be able to flesh this out someday (in my long-stewing book project on blacklisting in the music industry), but I truly believe that McCarthyism remains one of the most central domestic cultural politics of the 20th century and still shapes the air we breath in the arts.

Philly, this is this Friday and Sunday!

I shouldn’t be like this on a Sunday morning, but Penn Alexander’s tradition of doing a big 5K race with commercial sponsors (mostly realtors, of course) and support from the Penn police to raise even more money for their heavily subsidized “public” school full of wealthy families is just gross.

Whether it is tomorrow or some other time, Philly will have its turn at some point. I have no doubt that the community will turn out, but skeptical that the Parker administration will rise to the challenge. Hope I’m wrong.

will be curious to see if Roth’s wesleyan follows; it would be on-brand, but they are unique in NESCAC in having (small but reasonably serious) graduate programs in the sciences.

Just to recap, the apartment building next to my kid’s school that used to be affordable housing until a greedy landlord evicted everyone for “renovations” and then left it vacant for years, is currently on fire.

It’s not that I’ve ever been one to be super invested in the dignity of the American project or something, but sometimes when I remember that DOGE is named after an old meme involving a Shiba Inu, I do feel a slight sense of mourning.
