the academy: sports are a culturally-insignificant object unworthy of study the literal pope:

Our unofficial crowdsourced estimate of yesterday’s protest turnout is rising to 4.2-7 million as we gather more data. At this point potentially the second-largest single day of protest in U.S. history! www.gelliottmorris.com/p/no-kings-d...

A product of a cult of special operations that led to a basic misunderstanding of how US military power is anchored on logistics systems and a global network of bases that allow the US to move what it needs when it needs it to where it is needed America used to master the boring shit that wins wars

While you're drinking your Sunday coffee, enjoy this long thread from Doug Landry on the advance planning failures of Trump's birthday party. threadreaderapp.com/thread/19340...

oh my god, JD Vance got up and every time he waited for applause it was like six people clapping and THEN HE SAID TODAY IS HIS WEDDING ANNIVERSARY and barely anyone clapped

LOL

Genie: ok what do you want for your birthday Trump: a military parade, oh, and also millions of people on the street chanting my name Genie: okie dokie

I did not edit this, this is the actual parade with the actual music being played. CINEMATIC

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

This is the slap back to Stephen Miller’s “arrest everyone” madness. And an admission that Trump is under pressure from multiple industries that rely on migrant workers. This is huge and important. Keep amplifying the harm done by the Trump/Miller zealous, cruel overreach. Don’t bury this.

As jaded as I am, I still wasn't prepared for how sanguine the US media would be about the appearance of gangs of masked gunmen abducting people in broad daylight all across America.

Sinking land is a global climate risk, but insurers are leaving the tab to homeowners. The ECB estimates the region’s potential damage from "subsidence" at more than €2.5 trillion across all euro-area financial institutions... www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

There it is. The first ever Heat Advisory issued in Alaska. This is the first year it has been an option. @alaskawx.bsky.social

it’s because he has no ability to inhabit another mind — he thinks he is the only person!

El Faro, a Salvadoran publication, has led the way on the reporting on this: elfaro.net/es/201806/el... elfaro.net/en/202205/el... beta.elfaro.net/las-confesio...

UPDATE: Sounds like Trump’s rich farming and hotel buddies told him to stop his Gestapo from attacking innocent, hard to replace workers

Whistleblower Sam Salehpour, a Boeing engineer, alleged in 2024 that Boeing took shortcuts when manufacturing its 777 and 787 Dreamliner jets, and that the risks could become catastrophic as the airplanes age. Today a dreamliner 787 crashed in Ahmedabad edition.cnn.com/2024/04/09/b...

Holy Shit: Seth Moulton asked how many commercial ships have transitted the Red Sea since his purportedly successful Houthi operation. Whiskey Pete answers that two military ships have transitted. Moulton answers: Zero. The answer is zero.

Yep. I hear folks in leisure and hotel biz are just loving the collapse of tourism into the US.

just found out that Google shut down its internal professional development arm and replaced every single class with prompt engineering slideshows

🧵 NYC: Zohran Mamdani is an extraordinary political talent and he CAN win this. What a signal that would send to the country and to the world. If you have been on the fence, this is the moment to go all in.

Army picked crowd of only Trump supporters and made sure no one behind the President was fat. www.military.com/daily-news/2...

Strangely, this makes me feel a little better. This wasn't just a raw mass of soldiers bellowing their love for Trump - they were vetted first to ensure they were Trumpists. Oh, and the screening for appearance is another gem. He's trying to manufacture the illusion of full military support.

Really important story - army officials asked soldiers to identify themselves if they don't agree with Trump's politics that way he'd get only supportive soldiers in uniform during his political rally on base. Heavier soldiers were also barred from participating.

Climate Risk + Post-Event Recovery + Insurance + Housing / Real Estate / Lending = Potential of Short / Long-Term Rise in Asset Distress

Musk suddenly realized he was facing an unscheduled flight out of a very tall window. Wonder how that was communicated to him? Horse's head-in-the-bead Godfather style?
