That's one reason why I'm promoting a New Aerodynamics - the PREVIOUS Scientific Revolution didn't make any NEW Social assumptions available, but it offered powerful MOTIVATION to those who were frustrated by the inequity and irrationality of a Scientific system built on approval by Authority...

It's happened before; the people calling themselves Scientists, (or Natural Philosophers or whatever name's fashionable...) but plying their trade in a socially pandering way, are replaced by 'more real' Scientists whose method actually WORKS. And Aero's not the only field where it's OVERDUE...

(17/n) When Aero researchers set out to 'visualize' the air whose behaviour they wish to study, important choices are made about HOW that might best be done. And they ASSUME it will be pointless to look for density variations - because 'it's well known' that air is incompressible at these speeds.

IMO, you're exactly right; Airbus isn't interested in building aircraft for the markets identified by Emirates (even though Tim's performance as a Market Whisperer is well documented...) - and can't imagine any planemaker emerging to rival its own position... (Just like Boeing in the 1970s...)

...plus India and Turkey plowing the same furrow; where the wider business world expects 'BRIC' nations to become dominant, does Aviation have its own wave of 'TUI' contenders...? www.defenceprocurementinternational.com/news/sea/edg...

Is there a thread to be found in 'filling out' that story...? On the other platform, I've seen somea discussion in India's Aero world about the relative merits of buying Western military & civil aircraft (for instant capability) versus developing an indigenous industry. (As a 'deeper' resource...)

And a NEW PLANEMAKER may soon be based there; Emirates knows that Airbus won't build an externally-designed aircraft... "Asked if he'd like Airbus to resume production of the superjumbo, Tim Clark said, "They know we do. I've given them the designs."" www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a380-...

Probly resealable, so you don't have to chug the whole canful in one go, rather than an actual security feature... (Been around a while, but unpopular with manufacturers because drinking anything at a more controlled pace is likely to mean buying less of it...) www.easier.com/66662-first-...

(16/n) Ironically, the Aerodynamics of Flight those Engineers claim to 'know' so well are really VERY LOCAL WEATHER effects - some strong enough to become VISIBLE. But mostly, and most of the time, the processes that Lift an aircraft are both SUBTLE in amplitude, and INVISIBLE in operation.

'The Power of the Vortex' 4/n: Travelling in 1927 to lecture in London, Ludwig brought his videos; prefacing each clip with a diagram to direct the viewer's attention, he transmitted his contagious delusion to fascinated British audiences. You can catch it here: youtu.be/VcggiVSf5F8

'Angle of Attack' is an unfortunately blunt and aggressive concept - but also a popular way to describe the relationship between a moving wing and the air it meets. For an aircraft rolling on the runway, the SAME notion describes a 'Funnel Angle' between the ground and the wing's lower surface.

I was looking for video of a specific 2024 conference keynote. Nothing. Not even on the conference website🤦🏾‍♀️ With over 2 billion logged-in monthly users (‼️), #YouTube is a massive platform. And if you're already recording sessions, uploading is basically a 1-click process.

Another question that the Flying Magazine article 'begs' is WHY the FAA for example (and Peter's very clear text as an extension of their 'authoritative' influence...) so firmly REJECTS the idea of an 'air cushion' - while repeatedly and persuasively DESCRIBING that exact phenomenon...!

And you can Tiny Paper it...! 'Seeing annual scientific conferences as a focused update for the subset of scientists who attend is a very limited ambition. Instead, it's possible to think of the conference as a way to update THE ENTIRE WORLD on what's happening in that field of study...' Fig 1:

And @mikemorrison.bsky.social 's paper CONTAINS a 'Microlearning' Tiny Paper... "Counterintuitively, this may actually provide stronger bait and make people more likely to click through to the talk or article. At minimum, everyone who reads the tweet learns something, whether they click or not."

A 22nd-Century viewpoint gives PERSPECTIVE; I can see how 'FUZZY' some of the currently accepted concepts are - and that people are trying to find more precision there by applying MATH...! But we've been here before. It doesn't take a time-traveller to know that's how Phlogiston is 'discovered'.

Well, I wasn't suggesting you should impulsively jump on a stagecoach to Eastern Europe... (It doesn't always go wrong, but y'know...)

You've posted a link here, with a 'teaser' blurb or part-review. - if a reader enjoys the article, they can repost your blurb and link. But if you 'distil' the article, or part of it with one reference and one image, that's a 'tiny paper' the reader can easily 'forward'. bsky.app/profile/cint...

The musical 'cabaret' references how close America came to joining the 'Axis Powers' prior to WW2. Although the American character 'Cliff' has ostensibly travelled to Berlin in order to 'research a novel,' he's offered a mysterious deal by the nightclub's shadowy political backers...

#ResearchCommunication isn't some grand public outreach campaign. It's the daily exchanges with groups genuinely interested in the topic. #ScienceCommunication #SciComm #PublicEngagement #Communication #Research

Hi Alicia...! I've advocated (and only recently become aware that I was) for Social Media to be used as an outlet for 'tiny papers' (like a really brief abstract, plus 1 to 4 figures...) to platform reliable Scientific insights. Would you be able to turn some of your stuff into 'tiny papers'...?

Hi @mikemorrison.bsky.social ...! Do you have, or have any plans for, a framework that can empower this kind of Academic Distribution...?

Hi Shantha...! I may need a Leadership Insight - or offer 'food for thought' towards a story you can tell. The scenario: An 'offbeat' view of a tiny technical problem, held by an operator outside Academia, reveals the next Scientific Revolution. But how do I, oops I mean 'they', make it happen?

A curious approach, leading to friendly conversation, isn't particularly 'sneaky'. Your interlocutor may even welcome the opportunity to connect you with historical motoring or engineering material (not necessarily the restricted stuff right away...) that in their view is undervalued...

If it wasn't a fundamentally religious trope, I'd be keen to use it - because it recognizes Engineering as older than both 'qualifications' (which I'm often told I don't have, despite what I'm evidently able to do...) and 'authority', which is a shorthand way of accepting claims 'on trust'...

The two most recognizable ekranoplan types straddle the same gap - but the signs are harder to spot. The immense Lun, or Caspian Sea Monster, has a 'cushion funnel' that, viewed as a Wing, looks similar to the Orlyonok's. But the latter WORKS more like a wing -so it needs less 'tail control'.
