“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Standing up to the authoritarian wave requires more than cheerleading for democracy; it demands making democratic societies more participatory, responsive, and adaptable at all levels, from local to national, in response to the societal shifts driven by the Internet over the past 15 years.

Developing nuclear capability should be accompanied by a major programme to develop our emerging defence technologies especially for precision strike - long-range & battlefield - incl to develop non-nuclear strategic options (strategic level effects through massed precision) to hold RU tgts at risk

Dozens of inauthentic X accounts are posting coordinated, AI-generated content critical of CDU leader Friedrich Merz ahead of the German election, but failing to get any traction. Notably, they all misspell his name "Mertz", and seem to be very keen for Germany to restore energy ties with Russia.

Never in my life could I imagine that Ukraine, as a result of a war with Russia (!) under the leadership of Zelensky (!!), would become the leader of the free world (!!!!!) amid looming authoritarian swift in the United States and its growing confrontation with Europe (aAAAaaAAAaaaAaAAa!!!)

🚨NEW: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is planning to fire Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff C.Q. Brown, a 4-Star General and 41-year veteran of the Air Force who flew over 130 hours in combat as a fighter pilot. REPOST if you stand with General C.Q. Brown against Hegseth!

The border czar wants the FBI to arrest AOC. A Fox News contributor is calling journalist Mehdi Hasan a terrorist. Elon Musk said everyone at 60 Minutes should go to prison. You all see how quickly we’re descending into madness, right? It’s not subtle, slow, or anything but a premeditated scheme.

Here we go. Certain generals must be removed before any martial law plan is put into action—as Trump and Hegseth are worried there may still be some generals out there who support the Constitution rather than his proposed dictatorship. This is a political purge intended as a precursor to far more.

I know this will sound crazy to some. But the moment the Americans pull out of a security commitment to us, we must be on a hawkish footing. If we are defensive, the russians will devour us from within. We should be the ones taking the initiative. If there is going to be war, it's best we start it.

France should deploy some of its air-based ASMP nuclear missiles together with a squadron of Rafales Poland.

If the American's pull out of European security, France should consider in the long term producing and giving nuclear weapons to Poland. The region needs a nuclear deterrent. Poland should have a nuclear umbrella covering the Baltics, Visegrad, Finland, and in the future; Ukraine.

Tbh, I saw this and thought: “careful Economist, it can always get worse…” #happythoughts

Today, Ukraine honors the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. During the Revolution of Dignity, it is estimated that Yanukovych and russia-aligned forces killed at least 82 people and injured over 1,000.

Andrii Sybiha 🇺🇦 On this day 11 years ago, a hundred protestors were killed in Kyiv while defending Ukraine's independence and European choice against the corrupt pro-Russian government. The same day, Russia began its war against Ukraine—a military operation to seize Ukraine's Crimea.

Is Trump helping China? Nepal pushed away China to take a $500 million US grant to build electricity lines and roads. US officials aimed to blunt China’s influence. Now it’s all frozen because of Trump’s foreign aid halt. Our @nytimes.com story: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/w...

Two Ukrainian oppositional leaders: Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko (both hate Zelensky and hate each other) have publicly supported Zelensky, said his term prolongation is legit until the end of the war, and said elections are impossible now. Listen to Ukrainian opposition.

It’s a coup. It’s a strategic alliance with Putin. It’s the end of the post-war international order. It’s the triumph of lies over truth and in Putin’s case, evil over good. We are through the looking glass & we all now have to decide who we are & what we stand for

Prior to January 29, 2025 there had not been a major fatal passenger, American airline accident since 2009.

Its worth noting that while people now understand that Trump is really pro Putin/Russia, they have yet to grasp that he is also pro Xi/China. The anti-China stuff is as false as the tough on Russia stance people were saying he would take.

Has a single sitting Republican in the House or Senate had the basic courage to criticize Trump for his grotesquely pro-Putin outbursts?

Holy shit. America is indeed going full Molotov-Ribbentrop

I was electrocuted, beaten, stabbed in the leg and starved after being captured while defending my home and family in Mariupol. We held back Putin’s invasion for several weeks while Russia slaughtered over 25,000 predominantly Russian speaking Ukrainians including women and children.

I hope people understand what we are seeing here. 1) Trump and Putin are preparing a common plan to dictate to Ukraine. 2) Ukraine will surprise them (at least Trump) by refusing. 3) The War will continue. 4) The role of Europe will be decisive.

People saying that they are shocked, or that Putin is hoodwinking Trump still don't get it. Putin isn't fooling Trump or Trump has not changed his position. He is pro-Putin, he wants Russia to do well and he could not care less about Ukraine (and he hates Zelensky).

Molotov-Ribbentrop 2.0

Since the onset of the full-scale war, I have emphasised that the West’s inability to confront Putin stems from domestic democratic decline - a perspective that faced considerable scepticism. Today, this long apparent reality is becoming unmistakable.

Let this sink in like all the russian battleships on the bottom of the Black Sea. 👇🏼

Europe should learn from the Ukrainian army if you don't want to end up under Russian occupation. Better start learning now...

Trump is trying to single handedly save Russia from certain collapse

I want you to promise me you’ll terrorise her with this screenshot on its anniversary

Hi All, just sent out my weekend update, free as always. This is arguably the most momentous week in European history since 1991 or even 1945. The US pivoted this week to be a friend of dictators who is forcing unilateral concessions on democracies. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

День Єднання хочу звернутись до всіх, хто вірить у нашу спільну силу та майбутнє України. Наша єдність твориться не тільки словами, але й справами. Ваші донати підтримують наших воїнів, кожна гривня має значення, кожна гривня важлива.

Captures it perfectly.

1/29: First plane crash in 16 years in DC 1/31: Crash in Philly 2/5: Delta flight struck in Seattle 2/6: Flight wrecks in Alaska 2/10: Crash in Scottsdale 2/12: Military jet crashes in San Diego 2/16: Crash in Covington, GA 7 crashes since the WH congratulated itself for “restoring aviation safety”

The community note 🤌😘

Europe can’t rely on the strength of the transatlantic relationship to help contain Russia’s threat – it must lead from the front and be the true force of support that Ukraine needs. Not just for Ukraine’s sake, but for a free and sovereign Europe.

Appeasement at Munich "We do not appreciate what the Ukrainians have prevented. We lack the imagination, or perhaps the generosity, that is needed to see our own interests." open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too. EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them. Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)

People on X are calling for AOC's arrest for posting this.... so I am posting it everywhere!

Oh my god, Ukraine dipped the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet into the world of shit with $270,000 naval drones and sank its fucking flagship with two obsolete missiles -- and the largest naval power of all time that has 11 carrier strike groups says it's not prepared to face Russia at sea?

Just sent out this piece. Equating Trump to Neville Chamberlain is unfair on Chamberlain (and Daladier). Trump is actively trying to help and support Putin--that was not the case with appeasement. The policy failed, but it was different. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
