NSF is the U.S. National Science Foundation. NSF has existed since it was created by statute in the 1950's, and employs what is widely considered the "gold standard" process for science funding. NSF covers many scientific disciplines, and disburses nearly all of its $9B annual budget in grants.

I think at least some of you follow because of NASA flavored things. And I am hearing some VERY bad things that are getting memory holed as quickly as they occur. Not only that, but significant chunks of leadership at NASA Centers have been taking early retirement offers, leaving staff unprotected

In light of NSF being kicked out of their building, maybe it's a great time to highlight some of our group's work as funded by NSF: postdoc Justin Kader's newly accepted paper "Shockingly Effective: Cluster Winds as Engines of Feedback in Starburst Galaxy" dropped on arXiv 🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2506.16624

Oooohhhh, aaaahhhhh. These are the first images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, showing the Trifid and Lagoon nebulae. 🧪

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has just released some of its first images. Its powerful new telescope will be able to quickly spot previously unseen astronomical objects. https://n.pr/405DN8P

with everything going on in the news lately, i think it’s about time to bring this photo back as a reminder

Radio interferometry is a technique in radio astronomy where signals from two or more radio telescopes are combined to simulate a much larger telescope, allowing astronomers to achieve higher resolution than a single dish could provide. 🧪 🔭 Here’s how it works, in simple terms:

Totalling around 120 hours of observing time, this is the longest the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has ever focused on a single target. The deep field aims to probe the Cosmic Dawn, when the Universe was only a few million years old. Read more 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed... 🔭 🧪 ☄️

Probably inability to single-handedly defend the guild's garrison against an invading horde. The guild doesn't accept failure.

Ladies and gentlemen... the weekend. (also: you are important and are not alone 🧡)

Russia and China, have ramped up recruitment efforts targeting US federal employees—particularly those recently fired or at risk of termination. These efforts are unfolding aggressively on LinkedIn, where adversaries are reaching out under the guise of job opportunities, networking, and consulting.

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

Sigh. Did every one of them. And I even saw they misspelled "vinyl".

A barred spiral galaxy, observed with the Apache Point 2.5m Telescope in the SDSS survey. It is at redshift 0.028 (lookback time 397.0 million years) with coordinates (163.42416, 38.77025). 37 volunteers classified this galaxy in Galaxy Zoo 2.

Stunning new image from the James Webb Space Telescope offers a timely reminder that there is so much beauty to be found in this universe, if we look for it.

@msha.gov has joined Bluesky! #govsky

Time for the NSF Town Hall at #AAS245 NSF is 75 years old now. 75 years of discovery and innovation. Chris Smith, interim director, is opening the session. First large national effort:

From NWS LA: Extreme fire danger will continue thru Wed. PDS Red Flag Warnings are for the extreme of the extreme fire weather scenarios. In other words, this setup is about as bad as it gets. Stay aware of your surroundings. Be prepared to evacuate. Avoid anything that can spark a fire #cawx

STATUS: NASA-JPL is closed due to nearby Eaton Fire. “Currently, JPL facilities, labs and hardware are secured and protected. Deep Space Network operations, normally conducted at JPL, have been moved offsite to a back-up operations center.” Stay safe Friends!!! emergency.jpl.nasa.gov

Direct hit on the Sunset Fire in Hollywood. 🎯 Nice work, @lafd.bsky.social #LAFD c/o @nbcla.bsky.social 👨🏼‍🚒

This was a fantastic water drop in the Hollywood Hills Sunset Fire from one of the aerial firefighting planes. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
