Yep, one of the many profound ironies of our culture: 1) Expose students to a wealth of information. How to peruse it, analyze it 2) Lock it all behind sky high paywalls when you graduate 3) Wring hands about misinformation running rampant. #ripaaronswartz

Academic publishing has a fabulous business model: 1. Get the authors to pay for the research 2. Get the authors to do all the writing and figures. 3. Get other academics to review the work for free. 4. Charge the author page charges. 5. Charge everyone to read the completed paper. 6. Cash in.

My last year at university (2019) we had to purchase a text by the professor (it was just under $500 CDN), told it was mandatory. We used it to reference 1 paragraph the entire term. Total waste of cash and a rip off. I also have a problem with absurdly expensive books from academic publishers.
