American citizens sense, if not explicitly think, that the repression being given a trial run on non-citizens and for specific thought crimes won't stop there.

Not as optimistic as Levitsky. My sense remains that any economic downturn will favor anti-democratic & right wing forces even if they brought on the downturn ‘A recession would hurt Trump and maybe the worldwide economy, Levitsky said, “But ultimately, it’ll probably be good for democracy.”’

Foreign policy seems like a cheap asset that can still be auctioned off for a good amount of electoral support in an otherwise evenly divided country. Kevin McCarthy, like other Republicans, was opposed to this until he saw what a good deal it could be.

Is resistance to Trump rising from the Judiciary and from Universities? What role have his policy-induced economic setbacks and policy-induced radical uncertainty played in the apparently increasing willingness to challenge and defy Trump?

So Trump wants the power to purge universities of those for whom he will get the most adulation from his base for humiliating. They don’t even have to be Harvard faculty, and those first punished don’t even have to have anything to do with his political enemies. Mad king stuff.

Steve Kerr: "I believe in academic freedom. I think it's crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to. And they should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say, by our government. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

Lutnick said screwdriver jobs would be robotized in the US. So robots would be making robots. So how many jobs for robot mechanics & factory electricians will there be? If 3 M jobs were lost to PNTR, this creates 300K jobs? And if due to Moracev's paradox those jobs aren't automated, then what?

Very informative chart from Washington Post

It's not only that one may not only be able to teach a course on racism; it is that one might have to teach, as a feature of the world, that race is biologically real. That is, one might have to teach racism whenever human diversity is discussed. anthropomics2.blogspot.com/2025/04/this...

In 2018, when He Jiankui presented his horrific CRISPR experiment on human embryos, Liu asked the killer question: “What was the unmet medical need?” Liu is definitely one of the good guys, as this profile shows. And as an ultra-smart high school student he was invited to tea by Francis Crick…

Speculating that mad disruptive tariffs give DJT the political narrative that he wants as a fearless hero who alone would attack "the globalists" even at the risk of assassination to rebuild the nation in an Aryan spirit. There's a friend-enemy narrative at work, an implicitly anti-Semitic one 1/2

Tremendous piece that breaks my heart as the father of a college junior who has long dreamed of being a scientist. Will grad schools be accepting students in '26? Would it make sense to accept an offer if lab funding could be arbitrarily cut at any moment? Will uni's have lines to hire Ph.D.'s?

As long as Americans are nativist ( a society that can't control access to its territory is not a society that has a place on earth; the white majority will become an abused minority in their country; the white race could be miscegenated out of existence), the right can win.

I don’t think the country understands the nuclear bomb that has hit and destroyed Americas future. Our competitiveness globally was threatened - it is now guaranteed to dwindle to irrelevance. The future is based on science and technology. By the time they realize the damage, it will be too late. AR

Everything has trade-offs, you see. We've got to weigh the good against the bad. That's why we we refuse to consider the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art assessments of the worldwide impact of greenhouse gas emissions in federal cost-benefit analysis. www.propublica.org/article/ener...

It’s only a matter of time until a foreign national is removed from the United States for publishing academic work on climate change, global health issues, or Ukraine sovereignty

The early industrial revolution brought about a noticeable decline in stature (see Marx footnote from "The Working Day"); the digital revolution is causing a noticeable decline in reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Language is expressive & repressive. Repression by avoiding a topic, steering away from it, or censoring it doesn't make the topic go away; it just represses it. Even if largely effective for the time being, the repressed may still return, but in what form & when, who knows?

There's no clear path to profitability, which leads to more speculative investment. Religious faith comes out of failing human practice; belief in bringing about the Coming of a super- & supra-human and self-computing Power sustains sacrifice. We have www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/331339...
