I know very little about oral exams - is it possible to assess the same breadth of content as would be done in (say) a 2-hour or 3-hour in-person written exam? My concern would be the time (and cost) it would take. Agree with you re coursework/take home assessment though.

I don’t know that it’s ‘pivotal’, but is there perhaps a case that in a multicultural and diverse society, it’s valuable to engage the public pre-legislatively so that Parliament gets as broad a view as possible of different cultural and religious perspectives to inform MPs’ moral judgement?

Universities themselves have internalised the language of "employable skills" and "average starting salaries", and have stopped making the case that we are humans and citizens, not just future inputs into GDP.
I've had a go at that case here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/11807...

Progressive politics seems to have lost its faith in the people, and its ability to make moral arguments for the things in which it believes.
As the rough beast of Trumpism slouches to Washington to be reborn, that despair - and the temptation either to accommodate or mimic populism - will grow.
