Because "everyday people finding items by chance" don't go to @findsorguk.bsky.social Finds Day at Museum of Liverpool with spreadsheet from the archaeology company Wirral Archaeology/CiC they are from, finds already listed, measured & weighed with specialist equipment! finds.org.uk/database/art...

Great chance to see some prehistoric art this year😍... www.britishmuseum.org/our-work/nat... #Bradford2025 #CityofCulture2025 #IceAgeArt #Prehistroic

'Ice Age Art arrival of the modern mind' by Jill Cook Curator of British and European Prehistory at the British Museum, to accompany their 2013 exhibition. A great read. #SundayReading #Archaeology #IceAgeArt #Prehistoric #Art #Sculpture

#FindsFriday A late entry, but a beauty of prehistoric sculpture. Initially thought this to be a spatula, however it appears to be an abstract geometric carving/sculpture. Made of oak or pine? The radiating lines symbolic of the sun's rays; different stages of life/seasons/sky or something else?

I’ll be here talking about Peggy Piggott, of Sutton Hoo fame, and the importance of writing women back in to history. 🏺| ‘Female Foundations: The Lives and Legacies of Women in the Earth Sciences’ | Dorchester, 8th March 2025 #IWD2025 | Tickets available here: www.reachequality.org/events?fbcli...

#FossilFriday One of the most complete dentitions of Australopithecus africanus Sts52a+b from Sterkfontein, South Africa

#FindsFriday This #Neolithic implement was multi-purpose, a whetstone and a polishing stone. Showing signs of good use. Another from the tool maker's tool kit. #Archaeology #lithics #prehistoric

Lovely naturalistic scene of birds and a butterfly in a papyrus thicket, carved by an ancient Egyptian artisan some 4,500 years ago! Faint traces of paint survive on this limestone wall relief from the funerary temple of king Userkaf. Egyptian Museum, Cairo 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology

Australopithecus came before us, but that doesn't necessarily mean any specific individual is our ancestor. The fossil record is spotty in places, but the latest finds could give us enough clues to pin down how we are linked.

A study of ancient DNA from people who lived in Europe between 1700 and 45,000 years ago suggests that 63 per cent of them had dark skin and 8 per cent had pale skin, with the rest somewhere in between.

Dear @findsorguk.bsky.social how are you passing all of this off as "every day people finding items by chance", all from a secret "grid reference and parish protected" farmer's field at Clatterbridge, so you know they are a company carrying out extensive excavations/investigations! #corrupt Warped.

On March the 7th I'm delighted to have been invited to give the tri-annual Stopes Medal Lecture in London for the @geolassoc.bsky.social at Burlington House, London. It would be great to see friends and colleagues there. 1/2 🦣🏺

The @findsorguk.bsky.social is wide open to abuse and fraud by the staff running it from the British Museum and locally the Museum of Liverpool to further the interests of their friends professional archaeologists and historians. The database is being flooded with finds🧵 finds.org.uk/database/sea...

My response to Prof Clare Downham's recent vicious personal attack and Steve Harding's bizarre statement. And how this originates in the bias/corruption of the Museum of Liverpool and the @findsorguk.bsky.social www.prehistoricwirral.com/response-to-...

Majestic.

What happens when Valentine's Day and #FossilFriday collide? Hippopodium ponderosum (plate 61) by George B. Sowerby (1812-1884). We ❤️ fossils. #LoveIsAllAround View his full collection of 148 watercolours via our #DigitisedCollections https://buff.ly/4hzvfgF #ValentinesDay #Conchology #Valentines

Say it with Megafauna on February 14th! Cave art drawing of a mammoth, perhaps showing the position of the heart. From El Pindal Cave, Asturias, Spain. Around 15,000 years old. Photo: Berenguer (1994) 🦣❤️🏺

#FindsFriday The heart has always had symbolic significance since Prehistory. Representing the essence of a person and a token of love. Our earliest ancestors had an awareness of anatomy, as displayed in this polished granite heart #ValentinesDay 💝❤️💖 #Archaeology #Prehistoric #Neolithic #Wirral

It's #NationalCheddarDay in the US today. Cheddar cheese originates from Cheddar, Somerset, in it's honour here's a history of cheese in England 🧀 #Archaeology #Neolithic www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/inspir...

Cheesy #archaeology for #NationalCheddarDay 🧀 This is a sieve funnel from Neolithic Bietikow 🇩🇪 used for making cheese. Its location west of the Oder river suggests those living on the periphery of Linearbandkeramik society produced lots of dairy! 🆓 https://doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2024.136

Looking forward to this. I’ll be speaking on how we write women out of, and back in to, history.

Prehistoric #baby feeding vessels: marvellous feeding vessels in the shape of #animals from Vösensorf and Oberleis, Austria, dating 1200-800 BC. Baby bottles in the shape of animals are common in late Bronze and early Iron Age Europe. Photo: Wien Museum 🏺 #archaeology

#FindsFriday A Lower #Palaeolithic handaxe. Made from an igneous by pecking it displays wear from use on top and side. That of a right-handed human, it fits perfectly in the hand and has smart finger grips. #Archaeology #Prehistoric #Wirral #lithics #ancientbluesky

#FindsFriday A rare #Palaeolithic bone tool. The earliest fork/spoon? One ended has been broken and smoothed, displays wear from use on underside and smoothness and darkening from users hand. Thought to have been used to spoon bone marrow from bones. A trusted and essential utensil 🦴🪨 #Prehistoric
