As an example, here are all three levels of noise applied to the same card. They are all slightly animated (not shown; really adds to the effect).
I just really like the look of damaged lvl 2, as shown in the OP.

As you use the cards in PVP, there's a chance you get access to some exclusive surface modifications. These (Noise, Sepia, and Damaged) each have three stages.

A few months back, Duel Links released Chronicle Cards into the game. Events and promotions (somehow, not the shop) will drop occasional items that can be applied to cards. These will modify the surface (often with animation to mimic some foiling processes), border color, name color, or add a stamp.

One of these days I have GOT to get you to try the lands mirror. Crop rotation for bog to eat loam, holding up cycling lands to dodge the above, quartering/wasting your own bog to recycle, wasteland/karakas/maze to deal with marit lage, etc.
