Why is this bad news? Well, because books are cheap enough that this is tantamount to encouraging companies to train LLMs on books and similar content, and the ruling doesn't consider the potential cultural implications: that we substitute original high-quality writing with AI slop. 4/

The good news: Judge Alsup said that Anthropic acted illegally training its model on pirated books. The lowest damage for this copyright infringement is $750 per book, and their pirate library consisted of at least 7 million books. Anthopic potentially faces billions in penalties. We'll see.

I bought the his artwork a few years ago. The work ‘George Orwell Stencil’ is by an artist known as Pure Evil.
The image of Orwell is Spray painted on 1984 ledger pages. My copy is number 19/84 :)
