Q: so does it mean that the new TSMC semi-conductor factory in AZ needs to pay import dues on any components but the chips manufactured in Taiwan do not ?

It is so amazingly stupid that no one believes it. We are supposed to take him seriously but not literally, remember. So pundits can come up with many theories about how he is playing 4d chess. The alternative, what he says, it is just too stupid to be plausible.

How does balance of trade reflect value add? E.g. apple buys iPhones from china at $300 and sells them for $900. China is doing the low margin manufacturing and the US high margin design and marketing. When apple sells and iPhone in the US or Germany who is this reflected in BOT ?

The predictable thing is that the administration will start walking back on the Tarifs early next weeks with a random set of exceptions to whomever they favor the most… until they dilute the whole thing so the markets call down.

And please explain whether the US balance of trade definition includes services or only goods (IMF uses goods only). It would also be interesting to understand how it accounts when apple sells a $900 phone with a COGS of 300 where 100 of that goes to design companies in japan or eu.

These 60 countries should respond with higher taxes on Amazon, google Microsoft and other US services companies. Apply some pain to American big tech which has been so quick to cozy up to trumpism.

Hoping the EU is smart enough to retaliate with taxes and barriers to US tech and services companies. Import taxes on goods are a side show.

The US imports low margin manufactured goods and exports high margin design / marketing / services. Much of its exports in terms of tech, movies, the marketing of branded goods depend on „brand USA“. This is the greatest act of state self harm since the Great Leap Forward

The main argument is that a shutdown would have affected the courts (preventing them from putting any obstacles on musk’s destruction of the federal gov) and removed legal protections from federal employees. Is there any merit to it ?

I’ve always found reviewing code harder than writing code. One has to analyze the problem twice: how would I solve + how it was solved by the PR author. 2x harder. With AI copilots one is always in code review mode. It makes my life harder.
