The result was a massive hit to student culture. No community service initiatives, university-led social gatherings, workshops, guest speaker panels — all the stuff that kind of group tends to organize.

That got decently spooky once the plot kicked off, and I got pretty quick they were going for a fairy tale/folklore vibe, so the not-on-any-map bit fits the mood. That was just a jarring bit of exposition right at the top.
