How on earth can this country still hold the World Cup and Olympics next year??

🧪 NEW STUDY: Canada’s dormant oil/gas wells are leaking 7X more climate-killing methane than assumed by national inventories. Canada has 400,000+ old wells; 68% are plugged. The U.S. has 3 million+ old wells; 42% are plugged. (The U.S. is no longer researching this.) pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

That’s not the lesson I took away from January 6.

The day we have this at my university, I am quitting.

Just watching the federalized Trump military tear gas a peaceful demonstration in LA and wondering when the media will remember Trump's failure to call out the National Guard to protect the US Capitol from a violent crowd trying to overthrow the US government and assaulting the Capitol police.

Example 946,577 of upper administrators in US academia being repeatedly hired for their uncritical enthusiasm for the latest fad promoted by highly paid and just as incompetent consultants.

Worth reposting if one US national guard person sees it..

Donald Trump incited a violent mob to attack the Capitol. Hundreds of dangerous felons who brutally beat police officers with impunity were then pardoned by the President on his first day in office. Don’t ever lecture America about law and order.

Out today in Nature, our paper on the drivers of the record 2023 summer heating of the North Atlantic. Temperatures warmed to record levels in just a few months. The impacts on climate & ecosystems were severe. A thread on how this work came about and what we found.👇👇🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

“The best hope of holding Mr. Trump accountable for his culture of corruption involves calling attention to it and making his allies pay a political price for enabling it.” www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/o...

It’s already happening: DOE forced a 63-year old coal plant In Michigan to stay open because of an “energy emergency” even though closing it will save $600 million. But the state’s top regulator said “We currently produce more energy in Michigan than needed. There is no existing energy emergency”

“About a third of Tesla’s $35 billion in profits since 2014 has come from selling federal and state regulatory credits to other automakers.” www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

This research is very concerning. Up to now, global heating has been limited as forests have been absorbing about 30% of human-caused CO2 Plus, countries' mitigation pledges depend on more land carbon storage. But that forestry-land "ecosystem service" may be about to decline rapidly with heating.

This is nuts. We shouldn’t have to be fighting needless battles like this. So annoying. Just like the coal mine farce, mad ideas like this just get in the way of sensible policy making for improving lives and dealing with climate.

How did Sweden become a heat pump super power? Listen to Sweden's inspirational story. In 10 minutes I explain how Sweden has installed millions of heat pumps and what we can learn from it. The video is from a recorded @nestauk.bsky.social event. youtu.be/akMyeoQSht8?...

The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers. That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.

If we switched to #renewableenergy, the number of ships crossing the ocean would fall by 40% because they're just carrying coal & oil & gas!! buff.ly/dpTrSpO We have the solutions. Implement them. #ActOnClimate #ClimateAction #climate #energy #GreenNewDeal

Rheem came out with a cold climate model last year, so some of the biggest US brands are now in the space.

“Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.”

Citizens United is among the worst decisions in Supreme Court history. It's allowed billionaires to completely take over our politics and destroy our democracy. There are days when we are reminded just how pernicious that ruling was. Today is one of those days.

But by all means, let's focus on an ex-President's mental acuity instead

My Canadian university, Queen's, is offering TWENTY 4-year funded PhDs (40k CAD/yr) for a student of ANY citizenship who has been accepted at a top 100 US university but have had offer rescinded OR are reconsidering offer due to US policy. Details found here👇 www.queensu.ca/grad-postdoc...

Achievement unlocked! @earthsciinfo.bsky.social replaced his last gas appliance, disconnected gas service, and now avoids $46 per month in fees he used to pay regardless of how much gas he burned. That's $552 saved each and every year! This is an underappreciated perk of (complete) electrification.

Asking for a friend: how does the Golden Dome do against truck-based drones?

Climate activist Greta Thunberg will try to sail to Gaza tomorrow with other ships aiming to break Israel's seige and bring food to starving kids and adults. She tried the same about a month ago and her ship was bombed in a drone strike.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Nothing about this is OK. Grabbing a highschooler while he is driving to volleyball practice with his buddies cannot possibly be what will make America great. Grateful to so many in Milford, who are rallying around this young man, his family, and his friends. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/05/31/m...

something that stands out about this is just how cheap it is for us to have world-leading scientific capacity we spent ~6.75 trillion last year, and the combined budgets for NIH, NSF and NASA are barely more than 1% of that what an incredible waste to lose it all for a drop in the bucket
