US aid freeze claims first victims as oxygen supplies cut off Seventy-one-year-old woman dies after being sent home from USAID funded hospital. Others die after hospitals close in refugee camps www.telegraph.co.uk/global-healt...

I think @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social and @hankgreen.bsky.social really should join our efforts to prevent TB AND COVID-19 by setting an example with respirators and HEPA filters. It is not enough to talk about TB if you don’t acknowledge it’s airborne AND how to avoid infection. #maskup

Your 'moment of doom' for Feb. 8, 2024 ~ The future is now. "The Arctic seas have already become unrecognizable. The amount of ice we're left with at the end of the summer keeps declining over time. Soon enough, summer ice could become a thing of the past" phys.org/news/2025-02...

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Sulphur emissions from shipping have kept the oceans and seas relatively cold. On May 1st 2025, 3 months from today, sulphur emissions over the Mediterranean Sea will be reduced by another 80%. How will that impact the regional climate?

Next comes the Arctic heat ...

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

January, 2025, will likely be the warmest January since 1940, and possibly the warmest January in the last 120,000 years. 5 days worth of data to go --

Earth, climate, and planetary scientists: If you have an expected upcoming NASA/NSF/NOAA/DOE grant payment in the next couple weeks that, if not received, will have a real impact on your lab and staff, please let us know about it @science.org. You can reach me at [email protected].

Between 2019 and 2023, researchers paid $8.968 billion to make papers open access. Imagine what else could be done with this money if it wasnt paid to for profit publishing companies... 👉 arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551

While this isn’t good news, it is not a tipping point, nor does it presage a dramatic increase in climate feedbacks.

As journalists we have to walk a fine line, and sensitive stories often need to pass internal legal reviews before publication. I like how Wired handled this — the headline doesn’t mince words and actually shows you how Musk’s salute is being received by Nazis www.wired.com/story/neo-na...

Climate science is complex! 2 recent studies show that 1) A decline in cloud cover (over oceans) has likely contributed to the recent accelerated warming insideclimatenews.org/news/0512202... & 2) a decline in cloud cover (over land) has likely done the opposite! www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202...

Happy New Year! Any climate resolutions folks want to share? So far, I've been riding my bike more. A few years ago my resolution was getting fossil fuels out of my home. I did it and kept the last check from SoCalGas. What are you planning to do differently for yourself and the planet this year?

It’s not too late for us to make a difference on climate change & improve our cities’ survivability. Here’s a TED talk with some interesting info that speaks to making our shared infrastructure resilient & sustainable. Or read her book, “How Infrastructure Works”). www.ted.com/talks/deb_ch...

Today, the UK government announced a proposal to change copyright law - for the benefit of AI companies - that would cause huge, irreversible harm to creators. More info below, but most importantly here's what you can do (wherever you live): 1. Email your MP. Template letter in 🧵 👇 1/10

Cumulative CO₂ emissions reach 1,850,000,000,000 tonnes this year 🤯

Which foods can you (safely) store for emergencies? It seems clear to me that every passing year we will be facing more extreme situations and it’s important to be prepared. These are my researched suggestions: youtu.be/KRSmT-rFGo4 Thanks for watching and sharing.

🚨BREAKING🌍🌡️📈 New Science paper finds that the increase in Absorbed Solar Radiation from decreasing low altitude clouds is responsible for 0.2°C additional warming! 0.12°C of that over Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes. In line with the aerosol termination shock we feared!

Americans will throw out 316 million pounds of food on Thanksgiving. Here’s how it fuels climate change.

"No government is doing enough to protect citizens from the very present and widely predicted ravages of climate change." In Part 1 of his exploration of the climate crisis,Paul Ryder gives an eloquent summary of the climate pickle we are truly in - westenglandbylines.co.uk/news/environ...

Imagine the world if we’d been willing to learn from COVID… What if we’d embraced WFH to slow climate change? What if we’d installed filtration systems in public buildings to reduce the spread of illness? What if we’d demanded disability justice re long COVID? A better world is still possible.
