I have a new book! Digital Platform Regulation. Fun analysis of what society should do to get some competition out of of our favorite gatekeeper platform. Relevant to the DMA and US antitrust remedies. And free! Download here: som.yale.edu/centers/thur...

Mike Scherer, a leader in industrial organization economics, in the study of innovation, and in many other topics since the 1960s, has died at 92. Strikingly eclectic, he wrote (inter alia) about weapons procurement and the commercialization of classical music. More than anything /1

Great for consumers AND workers! 👏

This is legit hilarious

Are you an economist interested in the DMA? Please submit your research to an exciting conference about the DMA to be held in Brussels in September: www.tse-fr.eu/fr/conferenc...

Maybe this is how we can get broligarchs to care about stopping global warming: Just call it «terraforming» and pretend it’s a test case for colonization of Mars

Old person here to say that ICE did not exist before 2003 We opened this door after 9/11 and can close it again

From Twitter "You know how they say the 3rd generation to inherit wealth squanders it? That is what we are doing with public health right now. People living with all the benefits of it are dismantling it because they think it's just natural to not have constant disease..." OP: x.com/wonderartsy/...

This Apple order to stop blocking developers from linking out (to sell to users more cheaply) might break the dam that has been holding back iOS App Store competition in many jurisdictions. (The EU, UK, Japan, and South Korea at minimum have active regulatory efforts in this area)

GodDAMN this ruling against Apple in the Epic lawsuit is brutal. This is a judge who is outright furious at a company and it is not going well for them. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

WaPo op-ed: Colleges and universities are among America’s most competitive international exporters. In dollar terms, last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined. wapo.st/4luJyph

This is awesome. Why isn’t every research university doing this?

A university can lose its money and its reputation, or just its money. Those seem to be the choices.

Not gonna pretend like I know anything about Carney’s politics because I don’t, but I watched his speech yesterday and he essentially told Trump to fuck off and now Trump’s speaking about him with a modicum of respect. I feel like there’s a lesson in there somewhere.

"Yes, there’s danger in opening our gates to this statue. But there’s also danger in keeping it out… the danger of eroding the sanctity of the gift-giving process."

If Brad Karp has any decency, he would resign from the firm he has dishonored. If Paul Weiss partners have any self-respect, they will do the same to protest this capitulation.

NEW: Big Tech’s monopoly over online discourse threatens democracy. "Middleware" promises a path forward by adding competitive, customizable layers of recommendation algorithms. But Madhavi Singh argues that without targeted regulatory guardrails, even middleware could succumb to concentration.

The big US academic conferences will be much smaller in future.

The most formidable conservative jurist of my lifetime gets it in a way that the current Minority Leader of the Senate does not. It is time for Chuck Schumer to leave Senate leadership.

Granting a criminal absolute immunity and then putting him in charge of law enforcement turns out to be a mistake.

European (including UK) universities should be given whatever resources they need to hire US exiles. The long-term benefits - not just economic but intellectual and cultural - will far outweigh the short-term costs. on.ft.com/41xIOqy

So much for the DMA depriving Europeans of these *amazing* tools they're just clamouring for (very few actually care) www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

In my new @bruegel.bsky.social paper, I suggest a solution to handle small companies acquisitions by big tech amending the DMA. Check the paper here 👇🏼 www.bruegel.org/policy-brief... And a 3-min video teaser here 👇🏼 youtu.be/6l-nMCFOrgw

Gosh if they hadn’t cancelled all the summer interns (in many cases funded by universities) maybe they would be able to get more done.

It’s hard to destroy network effects but he is doing it — to himself! Fun to watch.

Let's be clear. Buying American weapons is a real risk to European security at this point due to political interference. Actually, it's an issue to anyone in the world relying on top US military equipment. Cc @jakluge.de

Where is the outrage in America about this shameful betrayal by Trump? Where are the Senators and Members of Congress who cheered Zelensky when he addressed them, but are now too afraid of Trump to say a word in defence of Ukraine?
