Having learned from many of my students that the integral of a product is just the product of integrals, I find calculus to be much easier than it used to be.

I still don't trust websites that don't have somewhere a geocities "under construction" template

While it's a two word phrase, I've always been fond of "mutatis mutandis"

After grading exams, I really feel like giving my students the Paddington hard stare.

I don't care to admit how long it took me to realize this was a printing error and not an actual kind of small category.

Tfw you read papers by a mathematician who has very good ideas but is pretty lousy at naming things.

Tomorrow I teach integration by parts. Long ago, I'd show the technique and say "parts is parts" in my worst southern accent, referencing a Wendy's commercial. I don't want to admit how many years I kept that bit, even though no student knew what I was referring to www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTzL...

The "complex product" of subsets A,B of a group (or ring or...) is AB = { ab | a ∈ A, b ∈ B }. I used to wonder why it was called "complex". It turns out that in the mid-20th century, "complex" was often used as a synonym for "subset". That usage faded, but "complex product" is a surviving remnant.

Someday I want to flex by writing a long paper, at least 50 pages, but in the introduction write: "In this short note, we prove..."

I miss Square One Television. After a day of grad classes , I would go back to my apartment and, too tired to study, would watch Square One TV. Obviously I wasn't the intended audience, but I really admired their efforts at teaching mathematical concepts to kids. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_...

As I think about my career, I am proud that I am generally regarded as the posteminent researcher in my field.

"There's a special place in hell for those who write dx in the numerator of an integrand instead of off to the right," he ranted about the calculus textbook, while his students sat and wondered how they were ever going to afford their tuition or medications.
