“There is no permanent Christian country, no single Christian culture, no single form of Christian civilization.” Andrew F. Walls

A common element of traditional spiritual worldview here in Africa is the need for gaining spiritual power. There is no well-being, & no protection from misfortune, without spiritual power. I have found that this is a significant part of the impetus toward forms of pentecostalism in my context, b/c

Spent time with a bunch of Kenyan pastors this week at a conference. Learned some are distressed because there’s a growing trend of “men of God” selling redemption á la Johann Tetzel (i.e. telling people if they give a certain amount of money their dead or unsaved loved ones can be redeemed).

An idea I’ve been toying with for a while: a book showing similarities in the use of money by American Christians and the use of traditional power/witchcraft by African Christians. I’d call it something like “Rich Doctor, WitchDoctor”.

Hades was destroyed. But its foundations were not sound to begin with.

My proposal “All Things Visible and Invisible: Nicene cosmology for Nairobian Christianity” has been accepted for the Nicaea 2025 at Angelicum in Rome next year. Ever throw a hail-mary abstract at a conference out of your league and get accepted? Oops. 😬

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about. 1) patristic spiritual exousiology retrieved for the African context 2) the local church body as divine revelation
