Our piece on organizing nuclear deterrence in Europe, where the nuclear history meets institutional theory, coauthored with Ulrich Kühn @ifshhamburg.bsky.social is now out in IP! Thanks to @stephofmann.bsky.social for inviting us to her SI! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

A very interesting finding from our new study with @profonderco.bsky.social: while Russians are generally more concerned about US nuclear retaliation after the invasion of Ukraine, this effect seems to be mainly driven by those that neither support nor oppose Russian leadership

Deze afleveringen zijn enorm te genieten. Ik zou hopen ook voor eentje met politicologen over de buitenlandse politiek van Nederland.

What are the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine for nuclear policies around the world? @profonderco.bsky.social and I co-edited a special issue of the Nonproliferation Review on the "Nuclear Zeitenwende," which just came out: www.tandfonline.com/toc/rnpr20/3...

Are you passionate about #IHL? 📕 Do you want to contribute to a unique ICRC/British Red Cross project in this incredibly challenging (and rewarding) field? 💪 But most importantly, do you want to work in a great office with amazing colleagues? 🤭 If so, check out this vacancy 👇

None in the Netherlands? Either missing data, or sth to be explained.

Right on time for Christmas, our SI of the Nonproliferation Review, coedited with @tobiasbunde.bsky.social is now out! Read about how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine changed (or not) how states around the world think about nukes www.tandfonline.com/toc/rnpr20/3...

We are looking for someone to lead our work on European defence. How to protect Europeans in a world of escalating threats? Come and help shape the agenda. Deadline is 6 Jan. Something to ponder under the Xmas tree? #EUdefence www.iss.europa.eu/about-us/opp...

Last business trip of the year, here I come! Very excited to see my students present their projects on how EU can use trade to advance its values to diplomats in Brussels

This whole effort is, in many respects, a sideshow. Well-intentioned, perhaps, but out of whack with the realities of how NATO functions. What matters most is what Trump says about the alliance and what that means for how people perceive the arrangement, above all Article 5.

In 2008, I was drinking tea with a friend in Bab Tuma, when he leaned and said “the fella in striped t-shirt follows me. Sometimes I take weird turns just to piss him off”.

We are recruiting a researcher with a specialization in public policy and administration or comparative politics for a three-year position in a Horizon project. The application deadline is 16 December 2024 (!). www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

Who wants to write a PhD on antisemitism in Europe with a top scholar in Prague?

Together with @tobiasbunde.bsky.social , we just shipped off our introduction to the forthcoming special issue of The Nonproliferation Review on “Nuclear Zeitenwende” around the world. If all goes well, it’ll be out before the year’s end. Very excited for what lies ahead!

The new nuclear "Basic Principles" just dropped (h/t @dvsteff.bsky.social). The key change is that it's the aggression that "poses critical threat to the sovereignty and/or territorial integrity" instead of "puts the very existence of the state in jeopardy" publication.pravo.gov.ru/document/000...

Putin has already escalated, unrelated to Biden's long-range strike decision. Last night's massive air strike is the first of a handful that will aim to plunge Ukraine into darkness and cold for the winter. These have been planned for months, missiles accumulated.

Glad to see this place getting more alive!

I've published a new book, Polarization and US Foreign Policy: When Politics Crosses the Water's Edge, co-edited by Gordon Friedrichs and me. Book features 14 articles by terrific scholars on key dimensions of polarization and how it affects conduct of US foreign policy. tinyurl.com/PolarizedUSFP

Lots of debate about how Israel is conducting its military operations in Gaza. But what does the US public actually think? Polling from the Chicago Council finds that while a minority of Americans think Israel is going too far, there is a clear partisan divide.

I am told by Strauss that in politics one needs an enemy, so my advice for today’s EU elections is: vote against those who are trying to cook the continent.

Why did Rishi Sunak gamble on an election in July? Alastair Smith, who wrote the polisky book on election timing, explains at @goodauth.bsky.social. goodauthority.org/news/rishi-s...
