REUs are an important way for students at non-research heavy institutions to get the research experience they need to decide on (& be considered for) grad school. At my REU there were 6 of us. 5 got PhDs. 4 made it to faculty jobs (including me). I don’t think I’d be where I am without it.

📣 WE DROPPED A NEW EPISODE! 📣 Check out this amazing conversation with Dr. Amanda Latz and Mr. Anthony Williams as we talk about the incredibly important topic of students’ mental health. Link in bio for how to access on the platform of your choice!

These people intend to destroy my work and the work of millions. What is the proper response?

In partnership with @council.nyc.gov, CUNY Citizenship Now! is helping individuals apply for U.S. citizenship on March 1 in the Bronx. Our team will help you: âś… Check eligibility âś… Fill out the application form âś… Apply for a fee waiver, if eligible âś… Prepare application packet to send to USCIS

The NYT's combination of total self-involvement with total lack of self-awareness is kind of breathtaking. Like a matter/anti-matter hybrid state.

Amy Klobuchar's got jokes, folks: Klobuchar: What is the difference between Greenland and Donald Trump? Greenland is not for sale. *boo* Klobuchar: Ok. For any Republican Trump Administration person who wants to throw eggs at me because of that joke. You can’t because they’re too expensive.

It's a lot. Every day, new onslaughts in so many different spheres. It's hard to keep up, let alone act. Simply being a patriotic American today feels like being an epidemiologist in the early days of the pandemic. Do what you can—then be gentle with yourself. Take time. You need your strength.

Congratulations to Prof. Barbara Weinstein, who received the American Academy of Audiology’s 2025 Honor of the Academy for her extraordinary contributions to and enduring influence on the field of audiology! www.gc.cuny.edu/news/cuny-gr...

"The Archives is a keystone of access to federal records...It was granted its independence from GSA in order to help it fulfill its important mission...Every agency is on fire now, but this is not a bureaucratic detail. In the long term, a healthy democracy will require an independent record-keeper"

My 16 yo son is looking at colleges, mostly out of state publics. I’m not paying full freight for AI “instruction” and support services. Want my sweet, sweet out of state tuition $? Guarantee human professors, support services. Hopefully, this pressure will help in state students too.

#Communitycollege #sociology faculty-did you know we have a new Community for ASA members who teach (or are interested in teaching) at CC’s? You can join a Community with no extra fee through the member’s portal. www.asanet.org/communities-... @asanews.bsky.social

With all the hype around AI and writing, I’m guessing most folks don’t understand how much rhetorical awareness is required to use it well. Composition teachers will not be out of work any time soon. (Can you tell I just started winter quarter?) #education #communitycollege

I’m getting mentally prepared for Spring 2025 by growing microgreens and “procrasti-organizing.”

The thing is, Cliff/Spark Notes were put together by editors/writers who read the books or knew the subject matter. How do we know that these “easier to read” AI-generated texts are any good? There is no “literal” intelligence in machine learning.

While the men of Twitter are having meltdowns over which brown people they are supposed to be hating today, the men of Bluesky are having a fun discussion about label makers. Be more like the men of Bluesky, guys. Chicks dig it.

This conference looks good. Will be of interest to CUNY folk:

We ought to, we need to build up our reserves of fortitude for the year ahead.

I worry about the Analog Divide. (I know it’s not really a thing, but hear me out.) My students are constantly sold the all-tech, all-the-time life. Meanwhile, the people who design the tech (Gates and others) send their children to low- and no-tech schools. We’ll need to find balance.

In this holiday season and the new year ahead, I wish you the fortitude you will need to seek peace of mind and joy.

Instead of welfare capitalism, we’re offering welfare to capitalists?

If your business model doesn’t work without breaking the law, Sam, then you’re not in business. You’re in organized crime. futurism.com/the-byte/ope...
